You know, funny you should say that about the broccoli. My mother grew up on a farm near here and she said her parents didn't grow anything in the winter. That just amazes me. (I wish my grandparents were still around so I could ask why not!)
Broccoli, cauliflower, peas, spinach, all kinds of greens, carrots, radishes, and so many other tasty things grow here in the cool months. Yet most folks only grow the warm season veggies. It's such a waste of garden potential.

Agreed, Laura. I was in total shock when someone told me about cold weather veggies. It was as if I suddenly had an entire new garden to learn from. The Winter garden is so much fun, and well- you saw my carrot. The broccoli got as big as basketballs this year. Looking forward to learning more from folks here.

Its sort of not "gardening", but an afternoon spent in a northern sugar-house while maple syrup is being made, makes being outside worth living.

Hi all. I am just dropping in via Tomatoville. We live in Medina co, Ohio, I garden to do a roadside stand and 3 farmers markets. We recycle used greenhouses and high tunnels so I am up to 3 high tunnels and 3 greenhouses... I need another one now... a really big one and an equipment shed for all of the gardening equipment. the garden is on about 2 acres. have apple trees, raspberries, strawberries and blueberries for a start. Rabbits, chickens, a dog, a chinchilla and several cats. and 4 young adult children.

Thanks Daylilydude. Yep 3 of each and they are easier to grow in and get a nice crop out of than the garden. I'll take them any day. I just picked my first tomatoes out of the high tunnel this past week and the big beefs were fabulous. Some of them were 20 oz. No cracks or blemishes.

Welcome, carolyn! I think it's terrific that we have a lovely new Carolyn here now. I'd bet she has a wealth of gardening, orchard, animal husbandry, and even child wrangling experience to share with us. That's cause for smiles all around, I'd say! And if you sweet-talk her, coppice, she might even send you some twigs from her apple trees this winter.

Now Laura, I'm all confused.
She (carolyn) lives comparatively down the street from me. Carolyn, do you have any apple trees? I am always on the scrounge for twigs for scion-wood.

Thanks sratcat. Coppice, I have plenty of apple trees. What are you looking for? I normally grow semi dwarfs so the root stock that is sprouted out there is all probably the same (m-11?). I assume (which is never the right thing to do) that you are looking for root stock not main tree growth. I haven't done any grafting so I don't know what you are looking for.
Thanks Laura.

Well, better late than never. I just saw this Board and remembered I had not made a post to saw hello to everyone here.
My name is David. My wife and I have a little less than 8 acres in the beautiful western part of Ga. Were are really in N GA.
I am a retired fence contractor and she is still working to support me. What a woman!!! Good lookin too. We live in the country and have a fair size garden area fenced in with chain link (and still had young rabbits getting in till I overlay-ed some chicken wire on the chain link)That stopped those little rascals.
We have been gardening 6 or 7 years and we both love it. I am learning every day and love seeing how others work their gardens and all of the new ideas re: pests etc.
Looking forward to learning new ideas from all of you.

No I have rootstock. I mostly use a standard RS--antonovka. What I am on hunt for are older examples of top (scion) wood, or rust resistant scion wood.

Hi Indigogirl17. I'm a guitar player. Only a little bit of backup singing, really. If I had to, I could sing a couple songs; my brother already sings one of them, tho'...

Hello Ladies and Gents, I live in Canada and I found this forum via Tatiana website link while I was surfing the lists of tomatoes. Last year I went insane ordering hot peppers seeds from all over the globe and was involved in some seeds exchanges as well. Last year I bought my self a light fixture, 4 ft T5 HO with 8 tubes, I saw my cutting just grew overnight. I was extremely excited and went out and bought another and my spare full bath was converted into a grow room! lol I grew over 50 plants which 3/4 were heirlooms tomatoes. By fall I had tomatoes coming out of my ears! lol I had to share my harvest with friends and families. Others I made tomatoes sauce, tomato paste, and some dehydrated. Now at this age, I'm trying something else that's new this year. I'm learning and trying for my Class 1 driving and also in the process of getting into an equipment operator program driving Excavator, front loaders etc. There are many stipulations: English test, Math test, fitness test...mmm I did ran 5 flights of stairs and down. Boy, my bones were hurting for days..I am trying my hardest to convince myself I could do it. lol Hubby told me to stay quietly at home and drink my cuppa by the garden.

Hi there, Yokoharu. Welcome to NJT! Can we ever have too many tomatoes? I always enjoy sharing mine. So far, what are some of your favorite tomato varieties?

Welcome to NJT yokoharu. I think that learning new skills or picking up a new hobby is a great way to stay young. And vegetable gardening is an especially great hobby, because you get delicious, healthy food from it. I see a lot more tomatoes and peppers (and probably lots of other vegetables) in your future. I hope you will tell us about some of your favorites!
