Hello my name is Rick and my wife and I have a small farm growing chemical free vegetables, herbs, and fruit here in So. Oregon. We have just about an acre in production now and we market through a farmers market, CSA, and a small on site stand. Having spent my life in the Horticultural industry using way too many chemicals I have found a better way and am now feeding the soil rather then the plants. I have gardened in five different hardiness zones and they all present different challenges. The most challenging has to be our three acres in Hawaii on the wet side of the Big Island where we can get as much as 20 inches of rain in a 24 hour period. Amazing how fast Black Spot can ruin a crop of Basil! Looking forward to interacting with the members and continuing my education. Thanks for the opportunity!

Hi all! I just joined this forum, and am really looking forward to getting to know everyone! My name is Sandra, I also answer to Sandy, and I live in North Carolina Zone 7b (Piedmont region). I have been gardening for over 40 years, since I was a little kid and my grandma let me help her plant squash and butter beans I have been canning food for just about that long also, and in recent years have become a big fan of my Excalibur dehydrator. My grandparents raised everything they ate, until they couldn't do it any more. I am so sorry that more people don't do that now. I am a vegetarian, leaning strongly toward vegan, so it's a pretty good thing I can grow stuff for myself! I sincerely believe that our food supply is in danger (GMO, poisonous chemicals, bacteria and other little nasties, non-sustainable agriculture, etc.) , and it would be in everyone's best interest to learn to grow and put up their own food!

I am a LOL gardening with my son in Northern California. We live in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest at 3700 feet elev. We get cold and snowy winters and hot 90 deg Summers. It is sometimes a challenge to grow some vegetables. We have been doing this for over 20 years and every year is different. I would love to get input from gardeners in similar conditions.

Hello. I am Barb in Pa. I am 61 and have owned this home for about 5 years now. I am married to a wonderful, hard working, loving, supportive gentleman.
I have a good size greenhouse we grow exotic plants in for fun, usually not for sale. I have had other things to keep me busy these last few years so the plants in the greenhouse have gone down hill but I hope to get them back into shape this Winter.
I have 2 veggie gardens 20x30 and 30x50 ish. My front yard is on a hill so we got rid of the grass and mulched the whole thing. It now has walkways and lil bridges. It's only a few years old now. It should be well established by Spring. I can't wait.
Barb in Pa.

My name is Dean & I just moved up to Watkinsville,Ga to take care of an ailing parent.I sold me restaurant & now work as a asst. chef so I thought gardening would offer my mom & I some outdoor time together as well as supplying the restaurant w/ some fresh veggies.I have limited knowledge in this hobby so I will be asking a lot of seemingly silly or ignorant questions.I love all dogs but have a special place for stray & rescue ones.I look forward to interacting w/ this knowledgeable forum.

Dean, welcome to NJT!! There are no silly or ignorant questions here, we all have to begin somewhere and I for one started with some beginners questions, so post any question you like, there are plenty here that have been in your shoes at one time and would be glad to help out!

Hi from NC! Just joined this site thanks to daylilydude . My husband and I started a very small garden in 2007 of just tomatoes and peppers (jalapeno and bell). We quickly discovered we absolutely love gardening. Since then, we have gardened each year adding a little more each year as we learn about different things to grow. The main thing we have struggled with is cole weather crops. We had a great first year when we grew them a few years ago, but since that time we are having a time with critters and deer. Thanks to a friend, I have a new method to try next go round. I'm still learning about growing herbs from seed...I just can't seem to get them to do well, and from what I understand herbs are supposed to be some of the easiest things to grow. I don't know what I'm doing wrong, but I'm bound and determined to have a good growing herb garden (from seed) at some point and show those herbs who is boss..ha! I can and freeze quite a bit but thanks to Hurricane Irene she wiped out our garden earlier this year so I didn't get as much canning done as I would have liked. Hopefully, no hurricanes will come this year, and we can have a great harvest. I'm still learning....seems that gardening is a continual learning process, and I love to learn and gain wisdom and experience from others. I'm glad to have found a new forum, and thank you daylily for iniviting me to join .

Welcome to the new members. Amy-what kinds of herbs are you starting from seed? Some are way more easy to start than others. Richters website and catalog is one great reference that mentions Ease of Germination and gives tips.

Thank you, Penny.
Strat, Thank you for the welcome. The ones that seem to fail with me are basil (our favorite herb) and oregano. I've done very well with my chives, but I'm having a hard time getting the basil and oregano to stay alive from seed, and I ended up just buying the plants. This year I will be trying basil, oregano, parsley and chives (at least). Thank you for the website. I will be checking it out and seeing what new info I can gain from them.

Hi I'm Shella, I live in a west Suburb of Denver near the Foothills 5a Zone. Gardening is a challenge here because the weather is always changing, never the same each growing season, Could have hot dry growing season one year, above average mositure another, sometimes late snows, or hailstorms, early fall snows. But I'm always up for the Gardening Challenge and I have not let this discourage me from planting. Happy to be apart of this forum and have made new friends with a few seed trades.

Hi there, Shella. Glad you joined. I've traded seeds with a friend in Colorado and have seen the pics of what the hailstorms do to her tomato experiment.

Hi! I'm Emily from just outside of Austin, Tx (they're coming to get us, lol). I have a small garden that's getting bigger but never big enough. It's overfilled every year. This year it's all about tomatoes, squash, tomatoes, peppers, tomatoes....
Tried kohlrabi for the first time this fall and I loved it. Still working on kale. And I'm wondering if Swiss chard tastes as good as it looks.
At any rate, I'm happy to bee here.

Hi fellow gardeners! =) Steve from TN here (also known as tn_veggie_gardner...I know gardner is spelled wrong, but it's a long standing nickname...lol). Gardening is more of an obsession of mine, than a hobby. I don't always have the best place to have a garden, but always find a way to grow at least a few things. I grow vegetables, herbs, fruits, alliums & anything else I feel like adding in. You can see the ups & downs, discoveries, progress, etc. of my last few years of gardening on my blog, linked on my profile on here. I'm hoping to be able to help some others with information on here & also get some help myself, as I need it. This year, for example, I'm already sowing Dragonfruit, Dwarf Pomegranate, Cowhorn Peppers (early for these, but this is more of a seed viability test), Stevia (hopefully, third time's a charm!), Broad Leaf Sage & Thai Dill. Those are just the very beginning of this years gardening madness. lol...want to do more alliums, more fruit & some other new items this year, if I can. Talk to y'all soon! Feel free to ask me any gardening questions, as well. Happy Gardening! - Steve/tnveggiegardener
