Why would it be necessary to use a heat mat? I am so confused. Well, it's sure not necessary, but if you have a cool house, it will speed up germination of the heat loving seeds like peppers and tomatoes. I have a heat mat, but don't always use it because I have too many trays to fit on it. Or I will use it for the first few days for early heat, and then rotate the trays off elsewhere with good light. You really don't want to leave the tray on the mat once the first seedlings pop up, because conditions are too warm and moist, especially if you keep a cover on it. You'll get those long floppy weak stems seeking more light.

I have been starting my seeds on heat mats but not the ones sold specifically for growing plants. I have been using this one:- Farm Innovators Model HM-60S Small 13-Inch by 19-Inch Plastic Heated Pet Mat, 60-Watt and the larger model. I have not attached it to a plug connected to a switch controlled by a thermometer but I guess that I could if I wanted to. I seem to be getting very good results but there is always room for improvement. This is something that I might look at more closely for 2018.

At first I was using just a plain-jane heating pad from wally-world my wife bought to use on our backs, but it got really old having to go turn it back on as it would automatically shut off after 2 hrs. it was hard keeping up with it... hence the reason for me looking into this particular type of heating pad.
