With more than 200 varieties of tomato seeds in inventory I just ordered another whole pile of seeds. This was supposed to be the year for reducing the number of plants in the garden. I grow each year with a theme in mind. This year is blacks and hearts. There are about twenty varieties of each planned, so let me know your favorite black or heart or black heart just to see if anything is missing. So maybe 2019 will be the smaller garden to take care of.

You know or should know and accept the fact that tomato growers suffer from a severe brain syndrome that is not well understood by the medical profession. I appear to have it too.

With somewhere between 400 and 500 backlog, still usually find about 35 from 50 in an annual swap. Never able to stay ahead of other swaps so the inventory gets bigger each year. This year, grew out 3 varieties for a Facebook group. Thought that I was just helping to add to their seed bank. Sent in the seeds and was informed that I would be getting 75 varieties in return! NO! Don't need any more! But there were 38 on the list that I don't have so..........

Oh, this is SOOOO familiar. Every year I say, "No more, I have a huge backlog of tomatoes to grow already!" And then I find myself making wish lists for seed trades. (FYI, daylilydude, this thread reminds me of how much the forum needs a default icon.)

I meant a smiley showing someone slapping themselves in the forehead, to express annoyance or frustration with themselves, as if to say,
"Ugh, that was dumb! I should never have done that!"

That was dumb was the correct call. But now they are ordered and something will have to be done with those seeds. The plan was to cut back to 200 plants from the usual 400...now it is back up to 399, so it is a cutback.

If I use small 4-packs, I have started 106 or 108 in the main cold frame. Mixed size this past year and just over 80. Presently set up only 60 but can always spill over into another cold frame. Depends on if I am able to handle as much garden as in the past. I fear that the backlog will show another net gain before the winter is over.

I'm really feeling the need to offer you seed for a unique Spanish variety of tomato I grew and very much enjoyed last year. Maybe not quite as dark as the blacks you are planning for this year, but Morado Cuevas de San Marcos was a delicious and productive dark tomato for me this year.

Gosh, that's not so bad. I only ordered about 20 varieties and I don't even have a place to grow them next year yet....

I purposefully did not enter any group swaps this year because I wanted to use up existing seed from other swap years of which I have not yet trialed. Well, so far I have one order in to Tania, about three more SASE type personal trades, some with multiple varieties coming, and now I see some more in the new catalogs that I really really want! It just never ends.

I must be a dud in the tomato department compared to some of you. I grow about 25 different types of vegetables (and different varieties within those types) but only about 5 different varieties of tomatoes each year.

No but, thank you. I am fine with just growing about 5 varieties and actually I have not even thought about what I will be growing in 2018 yet. I usually only think about than in January/February when I make up my garden plan.

I am giggling and nodding my head at all of this.
Really wish I had the time, or the space, that so many folks here have. Love reading about all the gardening that folks do, that I only get to dream about.

Good heavens. I am a piker compared to all of you. I only grow one type these days - Early Girl hybrid. In years past I've tried many kinds, including seed from you, Martin (on another forum).
But now I stick to the one kind - it just is reliable, and extremely good, especially semi dry-farmed. And with our on-going drought, I have not wanted to use water on something untested. At least that's my excuse.

I don't feel so bad about growing 14 or 15 varieties, after seeing some of these! I always think I'm doing well keeping my pepper varieties under 25.

I plant to plant only 2 types of tomatoes this year and one of those types is from a free pack of seeds. I also plan to plant only two types of sweet potatoes from starts I will grow in my windows versus ordering. Cucumbers maybe two types. Peppers? One sweet type and two hot types. TBD.

paulf, for blacks I liked Daniel Burson, Negrillo de Almoguerra, Ruby Surprise from last year, so I'll be growing those again. I'm downsizing my area in the CG, so I'm cutting back with everything . I try to grow 3 of each variety of tomato, but it may not happen this year. For hot peppers, I'll just have to grow more in pots and spread them around on the garden walls.

This thread reminds me so much ME! I always want to grow every tomato on the planet.
When you throw in my Bean and Cowpea obsessions, it's a case for Mental Health Issues.
Hi, my name is Mr. Knuckles and I'm a seed-aholic.

I would only grow tomatoes, dozens of plants, if I knew what to do with them. It is my favorite vegetable to grow, from seed to harvest. Somehow I have calmed down in recent years. I used to grow 15-20 different varieties every season, and my space is limited. Nowadays I stick to maybe 10 or 12, but I still buy more seed than I can use. It is indeed a disease from which I'll never recover.

I have narrowed the field to 35 varieties. The plan was for 24 so there would be room for other plants in the garden, but that went by the wayside early. Added two requests from my wife for a bi-color salad sized and an large oval cherry.

Plans are a wonderful thing.
I make plans, even garden plans, all the time. Like the lovely sound of a deadline whooshing past, the sound of a garden plan of mine crumpling up and away yet again is very normal for me......
Plans are made to be changed, why else would we make them???

I don't recon I'll plant any peppers this year. I thought about it, but kinda changed my mind. I'm concentrating on Beans and my F4 miniature Okra. I've also need to get the greens set out. They are getting nice sized now.
