spike. Nothing wrong with "sunflowers, marigolds and zinnias"! They seem to be doing just great for you. My Tashkent Marigolds are the most beautiful flower I have, I think, except maybe for the Shirley poppies.

All the backyard flowers are volunteers...Sunflowers, Tithonia, Celosia, Cosmos, Zinnias... If you're wondering where all the bees, butterflies and birds are, they're at my place...!... ... You can see my bench in one of the pics...sort of gives a perspective as to how tall the sunflowers are...A bunch are over a story high... Here are some of them...

bestofour , what are those masses of white flowers in the last picture? At first I thought they were phlox, but a closer look showed the flowers are more complex. (Confusing? .... back at the end of page 1 of this thread ! Some how I got sent to page 1 and I thought I was at the new end. I still want to know! )
ahntjudy , your yard is lovely, I love all the sunflowers and "color coordinated" shorter flowers!

ahntjudy, that's just beautiful. I'd love to visit your yard. Where do you live or what zone are you in? We've had more butterflies than every this year. If you ever have seeds of gomphrena I'd love to try growing it. september, the bottom picture is white azaleas and that's what's in the background of the iris picture and the one right above it is what I call star flowers (not sure of the real name)

I have a million of volunteer zinnia, celosia and marigolds like those of ahntjudy ... I love growing flowers without planting them!

This is my first year growing gomphrena. I have a red/orange one, and a total volunteer pink one. They seem to be a flower than accents others rather than being the show-stoppers themselves. The blooms seem to last a long time. I'll grow them again.

This celosia has been re-seeding all over the yard for years... There are hundreds of them... This particular flowerhead is huge...I put the pic with my hand showing to see the size... The top of the flower is so pretty too... The color in the photo does not do it justice...It's neon pink...

Wow! I've never seen one like that! Beautiful, but kind of looks like an frilly alien fungus, too! Are these annuals?

Your celosia are fantastic. They look like some exotic coral from the Great Barrier Reef. They are HUGE, too. I didn't realize that celosia got that big.

september ...Celosia here is an annual... I have so much of it that billions of seeds reseed all over the place every year... It's funny how that plant came to be in the yard... Maybe 15 - 20 years ago, I bought a flat of celosia, a mix of yellow, red and pink plants, to plant over at The Man's house... In that flat was that one rogue purpley/fuschia-ish color plant...The flower shape was a little different than the others...it was more 'spikey'...In fact, that's why I bought that flat, as that odd plant caught my eye... That particular plant took off like a rocket...At the end of the season, I just left it as I always do with those types of flowers to hopefully reseed... The next year, there were hundreds and hundreds of seedlings that came up...I transplanted them all over the place there and some at my house... That has mushroomed into an almost invasive 'invasion'...but a beautiful one!... A bunch of the volunteers have morphed over the years...some of them have come up yellow... It's even coming up at my neighbors house...They took a lot of crushed stone I was getting rid of that I had in the yard in areas where many of those celosia had been coming up and had dropped their seeds... The seeds traveled with the stones...Instant flowerbeds! And yep...I always thought it had that brain coral kind of look to it!... ...

It's been a month now since I posted that last picture of the 'brain coral' looking volunteer Celosia... It has now changed in shape considerably and grown into this enormous main flowerhead... That particular plant grew all by itself in a big flowerpot sitting outside the veggie garden...Never was even watered... I measured it today...The entire plant with all its side shoots is 4 1/2 feet high...4 feet wide... The big flowerhead is 13" long...8" wide at the top...and 7" high... It is solidly firm and very heavy...It's so far standing OK on its own but starting to lean some...I think I'm going to brace it up before any rain gets to it...I don't want it to break... Here are a few views of it and some close ups...The bees love the celosia... The other Celosia pictures are of some of the other many in the yard...They have different shapes, hues and 'textures'... The yellow one is one of several that have morphed... I note that the yellow one is starting out 'daintily' like the other fuschia one did... It will be interesting to see if it develops into a larger one like its 'cousin'... Sorry for the multiple views...It was just so cool...I couldn't make up my mind with just one or two... ... This is my outstanding flower of the year...I can also honestly say that is my outstanding flower of the yard for as far back as I can remember...

ahntjudy, Got the seeds and potpourri, which smells sooooo good. Our weather has been warm, into the 70's already. I might go ahead and sprinkle a few. I can't wait.
