I grew Steuben Yellow Eye last year. I am growing Steuben Yellow Eye this year. I bought a pound of beans from Rancho Gordo to eat and see if we liked them and we did but I saved some to grow. Is it a bush or pole bean? I am thinking that someone told me that it was a bush that needs some support but I forgot to write it down.

Oh by the way, my pictures are up for grabs if they are of any use to anyone. I don't get my knickers in a twist if I see my pictures posted in other places. It tickles me that someone might think that they're good enough. The only time I got a little peeved was when a website posted one of mine saying it was something else, not what it actually was. Pics are worth a thousand words.

It grew up and over my tomato cage which is about 4' tall.

hairymooseknuckles, I grew Calypso a couple of years ago and Yin Yang is another name for Calypso. Yours are something else. Calypso are the black and white ones in the top row, 2nd from the left. DSC00504 by Brownrexx, on Flickr

brownrexx, Well shucks I dunno then. I got a lot of bean connections though, so I’ll ask. The package was marked Calypso so that’s what I was going by. Thank you for the heads up!

brownrexx Well....The plot thickens on this bean. Some say yes it is and some say no it’s not. I have no clue. I was kind of hoping I had a cross or a mutation. I need a project. Oh well.... will update as I find info

hairymooseknuckles, I googled Calypso Beans and every picture that I saw showed half white and half black beans with either one or two black spots in the white side. They can also be called Orca which I think is a descriptive and cool name. They also are found in a red color but the same pattern. Your beans have a lovely black and white color but in a totally different pattern and the beans themselves seem larger than Calypso.

brownrexx, I think there may be a couple of varieties out there. She has it named Calypso and Orca. All the other places look like your bean. The beans I have could be a cross or a mutation. mandysgreenhouse.com/photo-album/

hairymooseknuckles , OK, mystery solved. Here is her description of Calypso and it mentions the small black spot which is what all of the other photos show in Google. Calypso Bush – (aka Yin Yang) Just fell in love with this bean when I first laid my eyes on it. Originally from the Caribbean! The chubby round black and white seeds (occ. some will have a tiny black “eye”…) are produced in heavy abundance in medium length pods, with averages from 4-6 seeds per. Is of a dwarf bush habit…perfect for small gardens. Will perform well in almost any weather condition and soil. That’s how true heirlooms do it! 85 days dry She is calling the ones you have Orca and here is her description Orca Bush – Back for 2021! Original seed maybe from Mexico. (Any leads folks?) In my humble opinion, these are definitely not the same as its kissing cousin “Calypso” or “Yin Yang” ! Therefore will be maintain separately. Black and white seeds are slightly smaller and more oblong and flattish. (see Photo Album for both varieties) Patterns are super varied, without any defining black or white lines, combined with tons of splashes and dots. Plants are very productive and bushy. Gorgeous coloured seed! Pods bear 4 to 5 seeds per. Pkt…$3.00

Jumping in for a distraction, since hairymooseknuckles mentioned that he needed a project... I have some Aeron Purple Star seeds that I got from aftermidnight a few years ago. These are a purple-podded runner bean - very ornamental and also have edible pods. In addition to what Aftermidnight said about them on page 1 of this thread (see reply #19), here are a couple of pictures from when I grew them in 2018: Would you like some seeds? These are a rare variety, and I hate for them to just sit and lose viability. They were the only runner beans I was growing that year, so my saved seeds should be true.

brownrexx , Russ from www.abeancollectorswindow.com/Told me he ordered a bean like mine from Double Helix Farms back around 2013. My seed is probably pretty close to that time frame and maybe a tad earlier. I’m getting to where I have to make myself voice notes if I wanna be able to recall and I’m usually too lazy to do so. Anyways, you are correct as mine is not the right shape or color for Calypso. I appreciate the heads up on it. Thanks again! oh and he saved it as Orca with Double Helix Strain in parentheses

Laura_in_FL, brownrexx, Ok, things are starting to come together. Dan McMurray provided the seeds to Double Helix Farms. It makes since I would have this bean as I have a number of beans from Dan & Val. I really, really hope I can grow it out. If I had kept better notes, the answer was there.

Before I discovered "real" tomatoes and developed an addiction, I would have called you bean people a little crazy. But now I just look at the posts and nod my head in agreement. Good for you guys.
Before my disassociation with SSE, I grew out several bean varieties for them. It was fun but not like being a tomato goofball.

paulf, a few years ago on the iDig forum I saw a thread called "Show me your dry beans" and I was absolutely amazed at all of the colors. I decided to grow some of my own and that year I gave bags of beans with directions for soup to a few of my friends. I was just thrilled with the colors but then reality struck and I found out that they almost all look brown after cooking. Darn, but I still liked the beans and I discovered that DH really liked beans. I just never cooked anything except canned beans before. I did discover that even though they almost all turn brown, they really do taste a bit different and I like the smaller ones better because they are less starchy (aka mushy). I also figured out how to make black bean burgers and we really like those so beans have been fun for me. DSC00621 by Brownrexx, on Flickr

brownrexx , That’s a pretty bag of beans for sure! Hensaplenty , paulf , Laura_in_FL , Growing up we had 3 beans. There were Butterbeans, Navy Beans and Pintos which we referred to as “Red Beans.” The men folk had other names for them and I’ll leave it to your imagination as to how they got their names. Butterbeans were 45’s, Navy were 38’s and Red beans were 44 mags (as best as I remember) i may have gotten them mixed up, it’s been darn near 40 years since I’ve heard them referred to as numbers. I remember having my first garden in 4th or 5th grade. There was a local news show/Ag we watched and the host Was named Johnny Watkins. He would give tips on gardening. One tip I remember was to take a tin can, punch holes in it and bury it beside your tomato. That way when you fertilized and watered it, the water would go to the roots quicker. Everyone in our family always had gardens and each time I would visit one of them they always let me “help” Back then Most of them grew corn, tomatoes, potatoes, squash (summer), beets, onions, peppers, etc. However I don’t remember a huge variety. I do remember my first garden I had corn, a porter tomato, yellow pear, red pear tomatoes. I remember it being hard to garden at home because of the “nut grass,” but I was determined. My corn was some kind of dent corn. I remember that much. I can still see that garden in my thoughts, even after all these years. After I married, I wasn’t able to garden because we lived in an apartment for several years. When we moved back to the farm, I was bent on returning to my roots! I bought chickens, quail eggs to hatch, ducks, and rabbits much to the dismay of my wife. I was finally home again! When I started on garden-web, I was so awestruck by all the stories and pictures of beans. The only bean we ever grew was pintos that we used as snap beans. Then I started starting collecting and oh my was I like a kid in a candy store! Packages came in the mail on a weekly basis. Then I started saving seeds and another hobby ensued. Well, I’m getting long winded again. But I will say, I take great pleasure in collecting, saving and sharing seeds. They can write that on my tombstone should they so choose.

brownrexx, I was just curious, do you like snap beans? I’m not talking about those skinny, round, green beans. I was talking about the Greasy, Wide, snaps that have beans inside. Put you a big ol’ smoked ham-hock or some salt pork. A big ol’ pan of cornbread and woooo weeeee that be some good stuff right there.

hairymooseknuckles, No, I actually do not like those big fat beans. I like little skinny French filet beans as green beans or dry beans. I also hate ham hocks so I would not make a good southerner! I make almost everything with chicken, even bean soups.

Southerners tend to like their green beans with some shelly bean! Gives more protein when many years back you didn't get to eat much meat.

Yeah, that's true. But I am exception to that rule. I'll eat the bigger pods with beans in them as long as the pods are tender. But given a choice I'll take the French Filet beans, picked young and thin.
If I want shelly beans, I'll eat shelly beans. Usually if I am eating a shelly bean it will be cowpeas or limas.

Thanks, hairymooseknuckles. If you hadn't done that, I would have given it a try. You just can't just reply "no" to a Dr. Suess prompt! I think it's a law or something. (As a mom of 4, I have read my fair share of Dr. Suess out loud. Probably more than my share! Green Eggs and Ham is one of my favorite Dr. Seuss books, too. )

This was the saddest year for beans I’ve ever had. So much rain, then the weeds took over, then more ran, and more rain. It’s even raining in August. It just isn’t supposed to rain in August here in Texas. I managed to grab a handful of beans for seeds, but they we not mature. They were dry, but didn’t mature into a bean sized bean. I’ll snap a picture, but it was sad.
