I always use them around my cabbage plants when I put them out in the spring to protect them from slugs and it works well for me too

Yes, indeed. Making a gourmet meal is a great way to impress a date, too. Would be a good idea not to make snails on the first date. Or any unusual offal, until you get to know her taste for unusual foods.

I tried that (crushed eggshells) years ago, and dont remember it working that well. Practically speaking, for that to work, I'd need lots of eggshells. And right now, consuming eggs is very low on the list. No particular reason. Also, the area where the snails are is just too large - the entire front of the property. And this year, because of our rains, the problem is as bad as it's ever been - a perfect storm.
I'm hoping that by picking up as many as possible will slow them down going forward. But if our multi-year drought didn't, maybe that's just wishful thinking. Mainly I think I had just not been mindful of controlling them till they were out of control. And the plants they did out-of-the-ordinary damage to were the Zinnias - the ones that the bunnies did not eat to the ground. It was a bad year to be a Zinnia!

Have you ever tried Sluggo, or another brand of iron phosphate? It's organic, and works for slugs, so it seems snails might eat it.

Have you ever tried Sluggo, or another brand of iron phosphate? It's organic, and works for slugs, so it seems snails might eat it. Havent tried that, but coincidentally, I was just reading about it and thought I might give it a try in particularly vulnerable areas. In the 'olden days', I didn;'t like to use the old snairol stuff - or whatever it was called. If I recall, the old stuff used to stun them and required exposure to the sun later in the day to actually kill them or eventually, they would recover and just wander off again. So here, not very effective. And I think it was not very benign. edit: Just ordered some stuff. I dont much like using anything, even 'organic'. But I caved. I shouldnt, but I do love Amazon!
