Not a lot of them here yet, but out at my friend's place, that has lots of trees, and the back area is a woodlands area, they were all over! Her son and I must have killed over a hundred of the tiny things! Are they all over there yet, brownrexx? I was hoping the winter killed off more of them.

They are all over again. But I read something that gave me an idea - they are attracted to spearmint, and methyl salicylate, and brown sticky traps. So I am going to take some of those scrap pieces of bark, that fall off that sycamore tree, and spread some methyl salicylate on one, and some sort of attractant using spearmint on the other, let them dry, then spread some tanglefoot on them. I'll let you know if it works.

We are starting to see the adults now but so far it has not been as bad as last year.
However DH & I were out to breakfast on Sunday. I was just sitting in our booth drinking my coffee and talking to DH when I saw something odd and did a double take. Aghhh, a spotted lantern fly was sitting on his shoulder!
They have a habit of landing on people's backs and they they walk up as far as they can go. This one must have landed on his back as we walked across the parking lot and then crawled up as we were sitting there. When I have been outside, I have had them on the back of my neck in the past. Ick!

Earlier on, it seemed worse here than last year, as far as the nymphs, but the adults don't seem as bad, yet. But maybe I'm remembering them from later in the season.

Another scourge from China...they seem to have nothing but pestilences.

So far the Lantern Fly adults have not been as bad as previous years but that could change. A few days ago I was killing some on my deck with a fly swatter and I discovered a wheel bug eating one. I have lots of wheel bugs so this is a good sign. Praying Mantis also eat them. 20220908_132836 (2) by Brownrexx, on Flickr

There is hope, then, that your natural predators will adapt to feed on them and keep them under control. That's a very good sign, indeed.
