From last year, there's a handful in a 2-quart Mason jar. Fun.

Ken, I cannot plant basil in an open area here because it does get fried by the hot sun. I have to plant it where it is pretty well shaded by other plants during the heat of the day. I have to water it daily, too.

Ciao Erwin-
Oh gosh, I'm trying to remember now. I know it does have a very distinct scent, not sweet, more savoury. I used it in both vinegar and jelly. I liked it as a salad basil, rather than for pesto. I save the Italian ones for pesto. It goes very well with other herbs like lemon balm, nasturtium leaves, and sorrel.

I'm disappointed in Sweet Dani lemon basil, it is getting black spots which I assume are fusarium. we've had a wet year, but no mildew yet. I have some tulsi basil that is extremely slow. the marsaillais and queenette both look great.

I am growing Genovese, Sweet, Lemon, and Thai this year. I have had more basil than I could eat the last few years, and had good intentions of processing the leftover basil but never did. This year I resolve to actually make and freeze some pesto. So do all you basil nuts blend your basil together or stick to one variety to get different flavors of pesto?

I made pesto last year for the first time. Froze a bit in ice cube trays then packaged them up. Haven't eaten all of it, probably getting frost bite by now. You just reminded me that it's in the freezer and also that I have Holy Basil, Red Rubin and Dark Opal growing this year, but no Sweet. Oh well, I suppose I could still buy a plant somewhere. Poy, here's a link with suggestions for pesto with different varieties. voices.yahoo.com/basil-pesto-5250497.html?cat=22
