Got the trellis up in the community garden plot and planted christmas limas, red noodle beans, rattlesnake pole beans and still need to plant a couple of armenian cukes on it. In another row planted dragon tongues, wax beans and roma II which I've never grown before. Still have okra to plant and already up are white lebanese bush marrow and lemon summer squash and a couple of yellow doll watermelons. I have eggplant and pepper transplants to get in and it'll be pretty much full. I may plant some giant sunflowers for shade too though.

Had to cover my strawberry plants, frost warning out tonight. Dumped a couple wheelbarrow loads of black dirt on the garden. Tomorrow I'm hoping to get onions, spinach and lettuce planted.

Er...what is JD Special C-Tex? ? It's a fantastic black/purple tomato that originated in Texas. I got barely a chance to taste it last summer. Looks like there's gonna be plenty this year!! Here's a link to read it's history: t.tatianastomatobase.com:88/wiki/JD%27s_Special_C_TexEdited by Stratcat. Fixed link.

On 13 May, I went to the fruit market and picked up a couple seed potatoes for 21 cents. I started my potato-in-a-tire project. We'll see if I get anything!

Lordy, Lordy, I got BER on several tomatoes that are planted in the large tub. Got out the calcium and hope I can stop it cause the plant is loaded down! SVB's are in my zuchinni already-got baby cukes and one eggplant on the plant (lots of blooms!)I've got so many hot peppers I've confused myself as what to do with them...HELP!

Sorry to hear about the BER and SVBs Cat. Hope the calcium does the trick.
On the peppers, if you have a dehydrator, you can dry and powder the peppers into a hot pepper spice mix. Just be sure to have the dehydrator OUTSIDE - that's an important point. I wouldn't try doing it in an oven inside the house either.
Good luck!

My first Rutgers tomato is starting to change color. I got my first okra harvest yesterday - two pods, heh. But only a couple of the early plants are producing, so it'll get better. Watermelons are coming along. Got 3-4 fruit per bag sizing up and the vines look nice and healthy, so hopefully there will be more after. My bell peppers are still refusing to ripen. The first batch of fruits are nice and big, though. One pepper in particular is huge - average length, but really wide and multi-lobed. I wonder if it came from a megabloom, since all the other peppers on that plant are 4-lobed. Unfortunately, I have SVBs in my zukes and yellow squash. I saw the frass and holes before the plants started to wilt, so I did surgery yesterday. The plants look good today. SVBs are pretty much all season long here, so they almost certainly will be infested again. I'm not sure how long I can keep them going and whether they will produce much more. (Ah, well, I can always plant okra in that spot.) I think I would be smarter to only grow C. moschata varieties in the future.

Laura,
For the zukes, you might consider Tatume (aka Calabacita aka Mexican zuchinni). I was just commenting on it in my diary thread. Izzy, recommended trying Italian Striped zuchinni as well, as she has not had any SVB trouble with that one either. I know the Tatume is a pepo. Not sure about the Italian Striped. Although I did pull a small SVB out of the edge of a Tatume FRUIT this morning. I guess if they can't get in the vine, then they'll just go after the goods. Lol.
Haven't found a good proof against SVB on yellow squash, although last year and this year the Bennings Green Tint patty-pan squash at least seem to last longer before going down for some reason. I haven't lost any of those plants yet despite multiple hits.
Sounds like everything is moving along nicely. Good luck!

Hey yall, Just a quick reply - on the run again. Here's a few pics I snapped for you. Picked a few while I was out there, and left some so you can see what the plant looks like. The big one is for saving seeds- starting to run low. For the past 3 weeks, I've been going out and pollinating them and yellow squash by flashlight before work. Good thing too, because the yellows are about done. Pulled 8 of those yesterday, the rest will be gone probably by weekend. Managed to get 4 qts yellows put up this way. Ravaged by svb. The zukes will last until end of June, if all goes according to plan. Had good luck with them last year - never took a hit. Romanesco Zucchini Yea!! Watermelons are blooming, and the countdown to cantelope has begun: 30 days til ripe!

I'm starting to pick cucumbers! ;DAnd finally some good, large tomatoes! The eggplant are finally making babies and the zuchinni will probably have to be pulled and re-planted. The old SVB's have really done a number on the 2 I have this year-but I have picked about 7-8 zukes off them!

I laid plastic and drip lines for my sweets and winter squash. Then planted and then covered the sweets and winter squash. It took the whole day. I miscalculated something and had lots of squash plants left when I got to the end. So I divided the next plastic sheets over and laid another drip line, which was NOT EASY!, and then put in another row. I forgot about gourds so I will seed them on Monday when I do all of this for the 96 melons plants. Then more weeding!!!

Yesterday was the Hummingbird working the plastic flowers, and last night, the first Lightning Bug. Today, I was out checking my tomatoes hardening off in milk crates. Toad Boy dug out a Flathead Monster and took up residence. Of course, I first re-potted the tomato and then took the picture. ;D

I got my pepper row with the hoops covered today (with the help of a friend), which is just in time, as some those things will be producing very soon, and those pepper maggot flies will be out, as well. Not much else done, though I did harvest a bunch (actually, many bunches) of greens...again!

its a datura, the type is purple ballerina. I start my datura seed when i start my tomatoes and peppers each year, i start them in soil not seed starter, then i place them on the bottom shelf of my little green house and position the green house directly over the floor vent so they get that heat,if i had a heat mat i would use that but i don't have one,I'm usually using my wine heater around about that time of year .the warm air from the vent works well and blocks most of the heat from cooking the seeds on the other shelves.the only draw back with daturas is aphids love them,I'm constantly washing the leaves with soapy water. this year is the first year i have grown them in pots, they are usually in the ground, then i use a spray bottle of soapy water ,i kind of like them in pots, they bloom faster and don't grow 8ft tall.they like that Alaskan fish fertiliser,i half the required amount, teaspoon to a gallon a table spoon seems to much for them ,they leaf and don't bloom as they should,o ,and the blooms only last 2 days but o so well worth it just to see that flower, pity theres no perfume. almost forgot, the plant attracts that huge moth but its a bit early yet to see them.
