It is also proof to folks outside my immediate family that Luna actually exists, since she runs and hides if anyone comes to the house.

I am a little sad but a lot relieved that my oldest son finally took Stella (the gray and orange cat) home with him yesterday. So now I am down to two cats again, Lily and Luna. After all this time - over two years - Luna still hated Stella no matter what we tried. I don't mean that Luna did some posturing, hissing, and swatting at Stella. I mean that Luna would relentlessly pursue and literally attempt to murder Stella every chance she got - it was like she was possessed! That was never going to change. Having to keep them physically separated in different rooms has been a real hassle. Worrying that Luna would find a way to get to Stella and hurt her was stressful. It's been less than 24 hours, but I can already see that Luna is more relaxed with Stella out of the house. Stella seems to be settling in well in her new home. At least the boys live nearby so we can go visit Stella from time to time.

How frustrating to have them not get along for such a long time! I am finally about ready to get a cat again, and I would like to get two that get along like the first pair that I ever had. There don't seem to be as many kittens around anymore, I do think more people are consciousness about spaying. (Good!) It would be great to get two from the same litter, and it's been years since I had a small kitten. I don't mind giving older cats a home from the local shelter, but they would need to get along, because I don't want to set myself up to deal with cat fights or territory spraying in the house!

If you're interested in a kitten, check again in spring. The animal shelters around here tend to have plenty of kittens then.
Also, if they are both kittens and you adopt them around the same time, they will likely get along even if they are not litter mates. It's introducing new cats or kittens to an adult cat that gets tricky.

It's introducing new cats or kittens to an adult cat that gets tricky. I have found that to be true as well. I have 2 cats and although we raised first from a kitten, we adopted the second one as an young adult stray. They tolerate each other, don't fight and occasionally play/chase each other but they don't sleep together or cuddle at all. One likes DH best and the other one likes me best.
