Someone mentioned Marigolds. My friend from another forum sent me some she's been growing for years. I had a nice little spot all cleaned up and I planted them. I came outside a while while later and Mom was planting Okra in my flower bed. I didn't say much, but I guess the look on my face must have give it away. She asked "did you have something special you wanted to plant here?" I told her I had already planted Marigolds there. Anyways they grew together just fine and once the flowers started dying, I began to collect seeds. I was walking up to the RV Door and a big gust of wind took my bowl of seeds! Soooo, I waited a few days and was able to collect more seed. Moral....Don't walk around outside in windy weather with an open container of Marigold seeds. Plus...Let people know a spots been planted. We be planting fools round here!

I know it didn't happen on purpose, but it strikes me that marigolds and okra would be a pretty good companion planting. Okra casts light shade that marigolds can still thrive in (a light shade might even be beneficial in a really hot sunny climate), and the marigolds cover the soil, which conserves moisture. Plus a dense planting of marigolds that completely surrounds your okra will deter nematodes.
