pepperhead212, I am not as suburban as you. My parents lived in DE and used to have tons of squirrels in their yard and Mom was always complaining about them. Dad told me that he "removed" 20 of them one year with his 22. That is a LOT of squirrels for one yard! I live in a semi rural area so maybe there are a few squirrel predators here. I always attributed it to the lack of big mature trees in my yard though. I am so glad that I don't have to deal with that.

daylilydude, My 112 pound mastiff plays with the squirrels. I can't catch a break. My 77 pound boxer ignores them just like my previous boxer. On the other hand at least the previous one would tree possums.

Squirrels are rats with bushy tails and good press agents. The only squirrel I like much at all is stewed or fried. Terrible pests, tear up wires and insulation, chew holes and eat my pecans, too, LOL!

I found out that one decided to raise her spawn in my attic. The roofer asked what to do with them. I said “They aren’t paying rent. Evict them.”.

Well you could build a squirrel catapult or launcher or the contraption this guy in the video made for entertainment...

Now what was the topic of this thread again? Oh yes, what one thing...
I'd say soil that supports good plant life. That includes not only good structure and organic matter, but enough water so the plants can thrive. Those of you who get summer rains (but not too much), rejoice.
As for squirrels, we have lots of ground squirrels here. They'll eat almost anything. That includes now biting the tips off the ends of the low, ripening chilies. Sigh... Could be the bunnies of course, but I'd rather blame the squirrels. When the population gets too large, I strongly dislike doing it, but I will trap and dispatch them.

I would eat them, too, along with rabbits, but around here, there's no telling what they have been eating, so it's not safe.

Urban squirrels aren't on my food list unless I was terribly hungry because of the diets they have.

That's cruel to the squirrel. I it means I am a bad person, because I chuckled all the way through. I have to give the squirrel props for agility and sheer determination, though.
EDIT: I am referring to the video on the previous page.

Think of it as a squirrel agility course so they don't get too fat or sluggish.
