I thought Ihad posted this yesterday, but apparently it did not go, so here goes again.
This old 87-year-old man has been gardening with a big Red, the big Troy-bilt that I think was called a Horse. It is beating me to death on the turns- you have to literally shove it around.
So, I got out last week and found a little tractor with a loader to do my lifting and I am in the process of finding a tiller to go behind it.
I also built a raised bed for the first time ever and planted it with onions.
I intend to go out like Martin's grandpa; giving up is not my style. I just wish I had Martin's charm and could find a young woman to do the heavy lifting. Even a middle-aged woman would do in a pinch.

Well, I see now that the forum has decided that I DID post yesterday.
Brownrex; I have no idea what has kept me alive and active. I am afraid of lightning, so I cannot claim hat it is clean living. I don't smoke, don't drink and have given up chasing wild women, so that might have something to do with it.
I suspect that it is some combination of lucky genetics, an active lifestyle, good diet and a tendency to stick to routine.

ceresone , @oxankle2 , you two are my inspiration! I'm 72 and get down on myself for tiring easily and the aches and pains compared to just two or three years ago. Hope I can still be at it in ten years.

And now this year there's a new tick in town which carries a new disease. I HATE ticks. Try to let your chickens free range. That will reduce the tick population a lot.

Try to let your chickens free range. That will reduce the tick population a lot. They get to free range for several hours every afternoon and they LOVE eating bugs. I can't let them near the garden because they dig plants up but my flower beds have a lot less bugs than they used to before chickens. I had not really thought about them eating ticks that might be on the grass but they probably do.

Brownrexx: Considering what chicikens eat, just be thankful that they do not grow eight feet tall.

Darn; the light in my computer cubbyhole has burned out and I cannot see the keyboard. It is like being back in HS and having the towel of shame draped over your head in typing class.

My father had an elderly friend that would come out to the farm with him. All the friend could really do was ride around on the tractor to spade the dirt, but he really enjoyed that! My father bought a tent with a canopy, a chair, and a cot or blow up mattress of some sort so the friend could sit in some shade or lay down as he needed to and take naps.
One of the women at the community garden has health concerns that limit her gardening. The doctor has told her that she can garden for 15 minutes at a time if she rests for 30 minutes between each period of gardening. She likes to talk with other gardeners for her 30 minutes breaks.
Margaret Roach's updated edition of her book "A Way to Garden" is coming out any day now and she has laid out the book comparing the stages of gardening to the stages of life. My understanding is she will address some of this topic in the book.
