So what variety should I grow? I don't have an instant pot.

So what variety should I grow? I don't have an instant pot. For beets, I'd suggest growing Detroit Dark Red - a proven favorite, and probably the easiest variety to find. I dont have an instant pot either. Cook them either in a covered container in the microwave, a pressure cooker, or in some water on the stove top. Some people roast them. No need to worry about cooking them yet however - first grow them. For best germination, firm them in well, and water them well. I start them in small cells first, then transplant. Better spacing that way. Each seed is actually a cluster of seeds held in a corky cluster, so each little segment you plant, you could get 2 or 3 seedlings germinating. If you do, don't try to divide them.

I have heard that some people think that beets taste "earthy". You must be one of those people pepperhead212 . Cilantro tastes like soap to me! I've heard people say that about cilantro. I like it cooked in pinto beans.

So what variety should I grow? I don't have an instant pot. Detroit Dark Red would be a good choice. I didn't have an Instant Pot before last year either and I cut the tops and bottoms off of my beets and boiled them until soft. No IP needed. I think that I boiled them for 20-30 minutes. I direct seed mine with no problem but they do need to be thinned after germination.

I really enjoy my fall and winter garden. I have already started cabbage and broccoli starts. Brussels sprouts have not sprouted yet. It's tough to grow anyway. I will direct sow : carrots, kale, beets, arugula, lettuce, cilantro and will be trying fava beans for the first time. When will you direct sow for fall?

I figured 117 degree heat factor made it to hot to plant lettuce, collards , and beets. I did manage to plant the squash though.

The farmer across the road was roundup'ing so I'm glad there wasn't a breeze, but it was tough being outside today. I spent just a few short minutes looking at my Okra and sweat just poured off me.

I think that I will plant some spinach, leaf lettuce and radishes this weekend. I already planted a real short row of rutabagas about 2 weeks ago. The soil is so warm that they popped up in about 2 days.

I've got to get some seeds. I've been sick and haven't been shopping. It's so extremely hot though.

The soil is so warm that they popped up in about 2 days. I'm still 100+Degree days here. On another note everything I have in peat pellets is up except for Cabbage Tronchuda. I'm not sure if it was me or the seeds, but not a single one germinated

Today I got some Detroit Dark Red beet seeds, buttercrunch lettuce seeds, radishes seeds. I forgot the green peas. It's still over 100° out there though and I'm concerned about planting even if I water.

They take a long time to mature and I know that they will have cool weather soon so I got them planted. Don't know yet if they will mind the heat in the first part of their life. When is your first frost? Mine is around October 15 so 90 DTM veggies need to be planted now

Mine is October 15th too but I'll be amazed if that happens. Yesterday I put out beets and carrots. I'm planting peas today and will do lettuce and radishes tomorrow.

bestofour, beets and carrots will continue growing after frost but more slowly. Peas don't mind the cold too much either.

I usually plant peas early spring and it gets too hot too soon so I’m making a change.

I usually plant peas early spring and it gets too hot too soon so I’m making a change. I did that one year too and they got powdery mildew in the Fall. If I planted fall peas again I would make sure to plant them in a sunnier area. I planted them in partial shade.
