Yay! Home grown green beans are one of my favorites! What kind are you growing?

I also haven't picked a single bean off the Purple Pod pole bean. Got one good meal off some unknown bush beans and I see Fortex finally doing something. Golden Sunshine runner beans loading with blossoms but no pods yet. Definitely not a bean year in Wisconsin.

I got my beans in late, a few had poorer germination than usual, and then the deer browsed off some of the young growth. Definitely will not have the amount of beans as in other years, but should be enough to freeze for my own use. Have just had my 2nd pickings of Fortex, Slenderette, and Roma. The Roma were ones with spotty germination, but since they are best used fresh anyway, not a big deal. It was also dry here most of the summer, so that didn't help.

Some of my plants are Kentucky Wonder but the majority are another .... I forget .... maybe Contender. It’s been a really hectic summer, with the garden not getting much attention.
The beans had very good germination and have lots of green foliage .... but seemed to grow very slowly. The recent rain showers have been skirting around us and the last several days have been overcast with little sun.
Today, I will give them a good soaking, and I hope they are ready to give me a good crop. The vines all look very healthy.

Only 49 degrees this morning!
Hoping all those bean blossoms get enough warmth to develop into beans!
In the meantime ..... I may dig out the flannel pajamas .... 🤔

Beans are supposed to be one of the easiest and yet can be so fickle. Friend used to grow them for canning factory. In 2011, received $1,100 per acre. In 2012 he got $218. I'm finally getting some Purple Pod after waiting for what seems forever. Vines look as if Jack was right!

Picked a third batch of Fortex, and was surprised to get as much as the first pickings. Also got more Slenderette bush beans than I thought were there. Smaller batch of Roma, and just one meal's worth of Nickel. I planted cilantro in all the longer Nickel germination gaps, and it has now sprouted nicely.

I've been picking about 6-8 lbs of Blue Lake pole beans every 3-4 days and canning them. And as you can see in the photo, they are over 14 feet and getting a little harder to pick!

pondgardener , OMG you're a real bean vine enabler! Watch out for those overhead electrical wires! I am cruel to my beans and make them keep going around and around the same open 3/4 circle of 5 ft high concrete remesh. It looks like a green iglo by the time beans start bearing, just a small opening to get inside.

Thanks everyone...I was a little curious after the vines had reached the top of the 8' support, so I tossed a bolt attached to a piece of baling twine around the unused telephone wire. Definitely stayed away from the power cable...wife thought I was nuts though.

First of September and first major picking on 30 or so plants. Maybe worth waiting for as there were 3 quarts when cut up to snap size. No sign of more blossoms so this may be all we get. Going to really enjoy those few we have.

Picked a bucket of beans this morning ... about a gallon’s worth. ‘‘Twas my 3rd picking. Still lots of blossoms out there, so if the frost holds off, I may get a couple more pickings. Been overcast and cold here ... not getting above low 70’s for the last several days.
Predicting rain this evening ..... hoping we get a few more days of warm sun .... and ultimately a few more beans. We love the fresh, home grown green beans!

I'm getting about 10-12 of those long heans every day, and the blauhilde are starting to develop now. I still can't believe that the long beans were faster!

This reminded me that I needed to check what might have showed up on the Purple Pods. Second picking was slightly bigger than the first. Now showing what I would have expected a month ago. Had some for supper less than an hour after coming off the vines. Not going to have any to can for first time in ages.

I've picked twice so far, about a week apart and have just 5 quarts in the freezer. I think it's supposed to be toasty today after storms that are going through right now, so maybe that will inspire the third flush to fatten up a touch. They're definitely slow this year!

I picked lots of beans early on but had to pull my second crop due to Mexican Bean Beetles.

If I remember correctly brownrexx and I are waiting until our bolita bean vines dry up and then taking down the vine to get the beans. Did I make this up?

No my vines are still growing and the pods are still green. I opened one yesterday and the beans inside are still green too so they are not nearly ready. I always pick the pods that are dry and bring them inside. I don't wait until the whole vine is dry but you can wait if the pods do not appear to be breaking open on their own.

Each day I am getting more of those Thai red long beans - 20 today. This is just on one of those teepees, with six stakes, so there's not many. I am definitely planting more of these next season.

Still trying to sort out this year. They waited until September and now won't stop. Picked clusters of 6 or 8 today. Had almost a gallon after cutting to cooking length. Informed the wife to plan on snap beans every supper until further notice. No augment from her as she loves them as much as I do.

I picked a few more beans today, and the blauhilde are getting a lot more on them - just not quite ready to pick. And I found two plants on the blauhilde tee pee that have green beans! I thought that those were all I planted there, but I guess a stray seed or two of the same color can get in. That was about all I did out there, but I took all of those beans, and cut them up, blanched them, and froze them, along with another 2 pints of okra. Beans, ready to blanch for the freezer. by pepperhead212, on Flickr Foodsavered beans ready for the freezer. by pepperhead212, on Flickr

pepperhead212, I am surprised that your beans retained their red color after blanching. Do they turn green after cooking further?

brownrexx Those long beans always keep the red color (or rather, turn a darker color) when cooked, unlike all of the short purple beans I've seen.

That's nice pepperhead212,for some contrast. I am always disappointed when colored veggies lose their color (like Little Lucy okra).
