OMG, I would go insane with some of the habits others have described. I guess I am pretty OCD with my kitchen. It is immaculate and I could find almost anything with my eyes closed. Even my refrigerator is totally organized. Spices are the only item that do not have an assigned location although they are all in the same cabinet.
I don't have to worry about DH being sloppy with cooking because he never cooks unless maybe I ask him to stir something while I am doing something else.
He does not like cooking and I do so it's a perfect partnership.

brownrexx , I used to keep my spices in a cabinet, but searching around to find the spices I need was bothersome. Especially the lesser-used ones that would end up way in the back. And I wasted money buying spices that I already had, but couldn't find buried in there. I finally got a door/wall organizer and hung it on the inside of the pantry door. My herbs and spices are all where I can see them, and they are alphabetized (most of the time...kids, you know). It's not pretty having a big white plastic thing inside the pantry door, but I can shut the pantry door to keep light off the herbs and spices - and to hide them from view when I am not using them. I use the bottom shelf of the organizer for rolls (wax paper, parchment paper, aluminum foil, plastic wrap) and the top one for boxes of ziploc bags. That lets me keep all of the herbs, spices, and seasonings in the middle shelves where they are easiest to see and reach. To me it's definitely worth a couple of extra steps to get to the pantry door vs. having to search around in the spice cabinet. Also, I used to keep the rolled stuff and the boxes of ziploc bags in an upper cabinet, and they were forever falling out on my head when I tried to get them. No more dodging the aluminum foil for me!

Yes, it is organized. And the door shelves for the little jars of spices makes a huge difference! My old spice cabinet was just a narrow, deep cabinet with a regular door (no door shelves). In there, all of the little spice jars worked their way to the back and were lost and forgotten.

Yes Laura_in_FL, the cabinet at our previous house was just a deep cabinet so I used some of those Rubbermaid turntables in there for my spices but when we built this house and I saw the spice cabinet, I just HAD to have one. I love it.

Throwing food away was anathema in my growin up times, food was precious, it got ate, and if leftovers were left it got ate the next meal or two. Only if something got forgotten and spoiled did it get tossed in the compost hole. (a hole dug in the garden for the purpose. when full a new one was dug beside it) We were taught to judge how much we could eat and not dish up more. If we left some on the plate it got saved for the next meal and had to be eaten first, we learned quickly. Parents grew up in the depression era, they had that food is valuable mentality and passed it on. Still bothers me when I see people tossing perfectly good food just because they dished up too much or didn't quite like the flavor. If something I put on my plate doesn't meet my taste buds with pleasure, I'm gonna eat it anyway and just not take any more.
