I had to clean the dust out of my kruk, as I hadn't used it yet this year! You realize this is a family forum right? So help me out here? What exactly is a kruk?

Loads of calories to keep your butter butt in wide mode. That's the only problem with that meal hairymooseknuckles, I love food like that though!

brownrexx, The weather is starting to cool down a bit and that’s when I like doing dishes like this. I also like tader tot casserole, but the rest of my family don’t like Tots. Can you imagine people not liking tader tots? This is also pot pie weather. I make a mean pot pie too. Fall and Winter brings good comfort food!

I thought everyone had a kruk! lol This is a stoneware type of mortar and pestle, from northern Thailand or Laos, but used more for dishes like Som Tum - the initial garlic, peppers, and other seasonings are ground some in the bottom, but most of the ingredients are just sort of "bruised", while mixing into the seasonings. This is why I don't use it nearly as much as my molcajete or granite mortars, which I use for grinding. Opening is about 6" across, and the woot pestle about 13" long, to give you an idea of size. octave1 I never weighed that one, so I just went and did it! It's a lot lighter than the others, since it's stoneware. "Only" 76.72 oz, the wooden pestle is 17.27 oz. I remember that molcajete weighed over 148 oz, and the pestle over 18 oz when I weighed those! Here are those other two. Molcajete and Thai granite mortar and pestle. by pepperhead212, on Flickr

Can you imagine people not liking tader tots? hairymooseknuckles, I LOVE them but rarely eat them. Serving size is probably 5 or 6 but I could eat a plateful of them and that's why I don't buy them. I have a willpower problem.

brownrexx, I don’t get them very often either. I do like them though. You can actually incorporate them so many ways. I even like them in burritos.

Speaking of steens syrup, I just opened my last can. Of course it will last me several months because I just mainly use it on biscuits when I want a change from jelly. Oh and on the rare occasion I make waffles or hoe cakes.
We mostly make our own sugar free jelly, so that’s what we mostly eat, but every now and then, syrup on a biscuit is a very nice treat.

Tots are a weakness for me, too. Straight with ketchup or a dipping sauce, or incorporated into things. Sonic makes a great breakfast burrito with tots, your choice of breakfast meat, scrambled eggs, cheese, onion, and jalepenos.
Which I try to eat very, very rarely, because it's definitely a widen your behind and raise your blood sugar food. Sigh...now I want one and need to distract myself.

I don’t know what’s for supper. I’m hungry in a one way and not in another. Everything that’s been mentioned here at the house, I’m not in the mood for . I think the women folk are going to have chicken and dumplings, but that don’t interest me today, so I’m going to pass on that. A peanut butter and jelly sandwich sounds good, so I think I just made up my mind.

My hubby is scheduled for hip replacement surgery on Thursday so I am trying to make nice and easily digestible meals that he likes. He is pretty anxious about the surgery and I think that good meals are calming so tonight I made chicken noodle soup with onions, celery and carrots. He really liked that.
I am still trying to think of something to make tomorrow night but on Wednesday night I will make one of his favorite meals which will be chicken and waffles. This is not Southern style with fried chicken but more PA Dutch style with shredded chicken and gravy over waffles. It's like an open faced hot chicken sandwich but with waffles instead of bread.

Thought of you today, spike, when I was watching a Mexican show on America's Test Kitchen. The lady making the dish said that she was mincing everything to a paste on a board - in Mexico, they would use a molcajete to grind this to a paste, but this is the way to do it "if you don't have a molcajete". And I thought "wait - I thought everyone had a molcajete!" I made a Mexican type dish today, using a bunch of veggies from the garden. First, I made an adobo with the end of the tomatillos, a couple of tomatoes, some garlic, and some toasted chiles - anchos, cascabel, and guajillos. I grilled the tomatillos and tomatoes, and blended all this until smooth. Then cooked it down quickly, over medium high heat, scraping the pan for 6-7 minutes, then added 2 c water, that I rinsed the blender out with, then I simmered it, while preparing the veggies. I had some beans I cut into about 1" pieces, and some okra I cut into 1/2" pieces - about 2 cups of each - and one small eggplant. Stirring various vegetables into the adobo, before simmering. by pepperhead212, on Flickr I simmered all this together, while getting the chorizo ready - something that I had made with that venison a friend gave me recently. After about 20 minutes, I stirred it in, simmered another 3 minutes, and made some tacos with some toasted corn tortillas. All the veggies, cooked about 20 minutes in the adobo. by pepperhead212, on Flickr Cooked chorizo, added to the vegetable adobo. by pepperhead212, on Flickr Finished vegetable adobo mix, cooked briefly with the venison chorizo. by pepperhead212, on Flickr First taco, with the venison chorizo and vegetable adobo, with some jack cheese. by pepperhead212, on Flickr

brownrexx, I will pray for your husband to have a successful surgery on Thursday and a smooth recovery and rehab. I know the experience won't be pain-free, but hopefully the pain will be tolerable. After rehab, hopefully he will feel better than he has in years.

I just finished a biscuit and piece of ham this morning. I wasn’t hungry, but like my Grandma used to tell me. “Eat something so you don’t get hungry!”

I made something I’ve been eating since I was 10 years old.
You take a pound of hamburger meat, a big old onion diced and cook them together adding lots of black pepper and some salt. Once done, add a can of pork & beans.
Mashed Potatoes
Spinach

I have no freaking clue. We normally eat around 4pm. Not today. Mom called and her sink sprayer sprung a leak. Dadgum plastic pos. I couldn’t even cap it off so she could have water to her sink. Sooooo. I guess we will have to go to town and buy a new faucet. This crap that’s made these days makes my butt want to take a dip of snuff.

Chicken stir fry over Basmati rice. Used the sweet and sour sauce I found at Aldi's and it was pretty good! Used a few of the smaller bok choy that were actually volunteers in the foot path between the corn beds. Figured I'd trample them if they stayed in my way. I left too much of the little leaves attached, and they were too chewy when cooked, but the stalks were good.

I also made chicken stir fry but my sauce was made from chicken broth, brown sugar, ginger and cornstarch. Normally I also add soy sauce but hubby asked me to omit than so the sauce looks practically clear. We had Jasmine rice. He is supposed to eat protein and lots of fruits and veggies to promote healing after his hip replacement surgery so he requested this meal. I think that it was a good choice. The carrots and red peppers were from my freezer but I had to actually BUY a small zucchini! Chicken Stir Fry by Brownrexx, on Flickr

Don't do this at home ...
I decide to make some home made mashed potatoes for dinner and I discovered that the milk had gone sour. I didn't have time or the energy to run to the store for milk so I got the great idea to use my coffee creamer.
It is Chobani creamer and is called Sweet cream so I thought it would be like using cream. Wrong.
I always liked it in coffee but in the potatoes, it had a sweetish tasted and hubby thought that it tasted like almonds. The potatoes were pretty awful and we dumped the whole bowl in the yard for the chickens. They liked them.

brownrexx, We just can’t use milk quick enough before it spoils. To cook with, I use canned evaporated. I make 3 biscuits mount near every morning, so we usually use that up no problems. For cereal, we use the shelf stable milk in a carton. We keep a couple in the fridge and it usually last a couple weeks. Being it just a quart, most of the time we use it up. I don’t like the taste of milk unless it has Oreos in it.

hairymooseknuckles, hubby asked if I didn't have any powdered milk on hand? Euuu, who has that? I have not tasted powdered milk since I was a kid and it was horrible. I should ty some of the shelf stable stuff.
