Do you have a special dinner for the dinner table on Halloween?

I usually pickup a pizza from Papa John's and eat it on the front porch while I give out candy. I have had a couple of the "kids" say that they would rather have a slice of the pizza. I save the cooking for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

LOL!! We go for the Pizza Hut's pizza, and do about the same, but at my twin brothers house as we live in the sticks and on a highway, so not many trick-or-treaters here!

The kids and I will probably eat hot dogs (the wife hates 'em), as I cook up a BOAT LOAD of dogs and hand out free hot dogs along with candy. The neighborhood loves it. My one neighbor hands out cookies & popcorn (along with candy), and my other neighbor on the corner handed out Mexican Coke last year (in a glass bottle - made with REAL sugar - it is delicious).

Yes this is an older post, but we have some new members since then, so do you have a Halloween spread?

so do you have a Halloween spread? YES! My backside from eating all the candy as I buy the good stuff cause we never get any kids! Plus I just want to point out that it isn't very gentleman-like to point out the size of a ladies spread . . .

I only buy candy that I would eat. This year Kit Kats, Twix, and Haribu gummies.

I don’t think I’ve ever eaten anything special. Not that I can remember anyways. I have lived in the sticks for 25 years, so the last time I had trick or treaters was a long time ago. Wifypoo won’t watch scary movies, so I usually just sit in my recliner and howl at the moon.
Seriously, I guess pizza is as good as anything since I love pizza, but I can’t ever remember eating it on Halloween. I probably have though at one time or another.

As for candy, I eat that anytime I want. I like good candy. Snickers, 5th Avenue, Reesy Bars. I ain’t much into gummi anything Or licorice either. I’d just soon lay down and let light shine in my mouth.

Many years ago, when more people would be eating the dinner with me, it was tradition to make a pumpkin soup, from a recipe in Splendid Soups, by James Peterson. It used a whole, 5 lb pumpkin, with the top taken out, so it could be put back in, as a lid, then the seeds and fiber scraped out. Place the pumpkin on a roasting pan to fit. I'd bake a few loaves of French bread earlier, and slice one of them into 1/2" slices, and toast them. Then combine 4 c good chicken stock, with 2 c heavy cream, and shred some gruyere cheese. Then layer them in the pumpkin - some bread, a light layer of cheese, a small amount of fresh thyme, then a little of the liquid. Keep layering the ingredients - slices of bread, cheese, thyme, and liquid, until it is about 2/3 full (it expands considerably). Put the "lid" back in place, and place the pan in a 350° oven, and bake for 2 hours. Remove from the oven, carefully remove the lid, and reach inside with a large metal spoon, and scoop much of the pumpkin away from the shell (I try to leave a 1/4" shell), and mix it up some with the bread - very soft now, having absorbed all that stock. This was served with even more of that French bread, and this is something I would usually serve that European butter with. This definitely is not a dish for someone on a low cholesterol diet! I usually served a simple salad, while the soup was baking, so we would get a few greens in the meal. And the leftovers make a good casserole, topped with more cheese! It's probably been 15 years or more since I made this, yet I remember it like I made it yesterday! Can't remember people's names, however.

Usually not. My neighborhood is full of trick-or-treaters (typically we get 200+ kids) and the little ones start early. So dinner is whatever is fast so we can eat early. But there was one year that I made a Halloween dinner for the kids with "roasted brains" floating in "blood," served with "worms" and a "spider":
The rest of the meal turned out just okay, but I was really happy with the way the spider came out. However, the spider was supposed to be dark purple; I washed the spider with food dye before baking, not realizing that the heat of the oven would completely eliminate the color. But if you see some dark areas in the creases of the bread, it's the last remnants of the dye. After it was baked, I couldn't figure out a way to color it that wouldn't make the crust go soggy, so I left it. Even though the color wasn't what I intended, the kids really loved it. And it tasted good, too.

I haven't done that for years, but I have a mold I got free, to make a brain, which I make sort of natural color, using 2 natural food colors, and with agar, so it can sit on my front steps, to gross the kids out. Brain food, for Halloween treat. by pepperhead212, on Flickr

We never get trick & treaters because our driveway is far off any main road. No special meal, no special plans. Our son's girlfriend always dresses their dogs up in costumes. My cats would murder me if I tried. pepperhead212 , I would do tricks or bring treats if I ever got a chance to go to your house for that pumpkin soup meal!

I remember back in either 83 or 84, me and a buddy of mine were invited to a costume party by a couple of girls we hung out with. They both worked at a pizza parlor and on Friday/Saturday nights he and I would go up there about an hour before closing, eat pizza and wait for their shift to end, then we’d all go dancing. My buddies girl was from a rather wealthy family and they had a huge costume party every year. We had a ton of fun that year. I’ve always wanted to do something like that again, but somehow just never have.
