www.durgan.org/URL/?IHRDW 29 September 2011 Mulch. Mulch, partially composed wood chips, are available from the City free of charge. It is only necessary to pick them up. There is a half cubic yard box placed in the back of he Van to accomplish this task. Today a load was transported and the mulch placed on the Saffron Crocus bed for overwintering to ameliorate the effects of the freezing and thawing cycles. I use wood chip mulch on everything in the garden. My soil is good clay which has been modified with compost from the city, picked up in May. There is nearly 100 cubic yards of compost added in the garden over 6 years. The soil under the clay is almost concrete about two feet down, hence no ground water or wick effect. All my water comes from the surface. The mulch limits evaporation of water to a large degree.
