My potatoes' leaves are starting to turn, so I thought I'd dig up a few.
This new crop of potatoes are mostly right near soil level. How very odd. I've never seen this before. I of course plant the potatoes 6-8" down, so why are the plants behaving weird like this?

My spuds always grew just under the mulch. For me I never quite find the 'around tuit', in time to hill. My fix has ever been to mulch thickly at least twice.
I'm not seeing a whole lot of bloom or fruit on the TPS (of Tom Wagners) russets. So I dunno if I'll have clones to work from next year, or next-generation russet TPS.
The one time I fished around in the mulch a few weeks ago, rummaging for spuds, my fingers walking didn't bump into any tubers. The tops look great, so I am not too worried.
Eventualy the tops will die back and I'll disassemble the bed and find out what I got-or don't.

this is the first year I didn't grow potatoes.. the last 2 years were pretty productive however.. and I found that you have to turn the WHOLE side the garden about a foot or two AFTER you think you got them all .. they sometimes like to go WAY down.. and have surprised by a few being the biggest and down where I thought they wouldn't be..
