Is anybody growing not sweetcorn? if so what kind and what do you do with it? I'm growing Painted Mountain flour corn and will probably parch most of it, and maybe try making hominy using pickling lime or wood ashes. I might try grinding some in the blender for cornbread. Making meal out of corn is a problem because you pretty much have to invest in a mill if you plan on making much, which seems like it takes away the economic advantage of garden growing. Hopefully the parched corn will be a good substitute for roasted pumpkin seeds. www.garden.org/subchannels/health/cooking?q=show&id=71

I'm still trying to get about half of what I want planted for Alan Bishops' Astronomie Domini sweet corn, in. It was a very rainy May...
'Sh' corn is out there. Its passable at first milk as sweet corn.

Painted Mountain makes good sweetcorn at the milk stage. Makes ok meal, sells well as a decoration, in the ear. It grows so fast here I could easily plant 2 crops a year. zone 6b

Well, the racoons left me one ear of my early planted flour corn. I separated out hills by color and hand pollinated hoping to get better flavor. The one ear was lavander/clay-red color. I saved half for seed and parched the rest in the microwave. Even without any seasoning, it was a better snack food than the dry roasted soybeans we have in the cupboard, and about the same amount of crunch.
I suspect that I could get two crops here as well but dealing with pests attacking the seedlings in mid summer might be a problem. Intercropping might be better since Painted mountain is so early it can be pulled before other things get huge.

My corn did not grow well no surprise as it was an "in it goes" experiment BUT--- Most if not all was hit by a borer and my question is- Can I reuse the soil, is it history and/or do I need to treat it? There is no doubt all of the soil will freeze solid as winter blows through CNY if that helps.

I think that is one reason why people use crop rotation, just put something there that does not have issues with the borer next year

figure out how to fertilize in such a way to raise the brix high enough to get rid of borers. I have raised several varieties, I'll probably grow mostly looney corn since it's a locally adapted variety from a local grower and makes good tasting cornbread. Long ago I invested in a good large grain mill, I got the "la milpa" made by CS bell company. It's done us a good job ever since. They still make them. www.csbellco.com/

Reuben, I'm planning on growing astronimy domine for my main-sweet corn patch and a second smaller patch of a flour corn (hickory Cane).
Time'll tell if theres enough sugars in the HC, to permit a short window of green corn.
