My husband ate one of my pickled bhut jolokias and is very sick now. Almost going to ER. I gave him 4 peptos and trying to get in some Pepcids and milk. He first tried all sorts of snacks to ease the burn but now stomach pain is very bad!

Wow! I'd call the ER and tell them what you did and get their advice. If antacids aren't touching it... Wow! I hope to hear that he's OK real soon. Please let us know what helps with the stomach burn. Good luck minnie.

He heaved some and got the Pepcid down and came around. He said it changed quickly. Then he wanted dinner but afterward he got the burning runs! Then he took Imodium. He had a pretty bad time! He said he blames me for giving him the pepper- and pickling it.

I'm glad DH is OK. When it came up on him, it burnt, too, no doubt. Tabasco does. Then the acid s@#*s! Time to give that tummy a rest. Thanks for replying. I didn't know how much pain would be left after the stomach emptied. In 2008, I took the smallest nibble from the bottom of a Bhut Jolokia I grew. I was at the neighbors and instantly I had a tear run down my cheek. I walked home and got a drink. That wasn't even the hottest part with the seeds and membrane!

Minnie dear, Bhut Jolokia's have too many scoville units of heat. Next time feed him red cap milk and bread with butter on it. Or pray for a house to fall on him.
You did mention that the Bhut's were really really hot? I'm not sure if the capsaisin is enough to actually kill somebody, but hubby might want to read up on this active part of hot peppers. So his dining pleasure can be moderated by others review(s).

That is why I don't grow anything hotter than a Thai Hot. I like spicey food but there is a definite limit.

He said today that he never blamed me, only himself for eating a whole one. He is quite aware of the bhut being the hottest pepper in the world at 1 million scovilles, or as he says BTUs. He thought that the pickling would make it ok and frankly normal peppers are not hot enough. You should see him at the Thai restaurant nearby. First of all they know him by name and know he will order Som Tum as hot as possible. I can hardly take a bite, even with rice. I make it at home but not that hot.
Yesterday when I was searching what would make him feel better I found an article about an Indian woman who ate 51 bhuts for a contest or something in the UK. It said she did get sick after.
Anyway, even if you can handle spicy in the mouth, you cannot handle it in the tummy. It is impossible, it seems, even for someone who eats spicy all the time.
Hub is yucky and achy and so on today after the atomic runs. He has a greater respect for bhuts. I also have learned I might need to warn people more who want to buy them. I sold many plants in spring and grew just one plant myself but had a lot of fruit from it. It is still alive at my mom's house.

Minnie, apparently he is one of those blessed (if you want to call it that) with less receptors for the capsaicin. Don't pick up "hot" as much. From what I've read, the effect is a type of poisoning. I've never heard of someone dying from eating peppers, but it sure does throw the body into trauma. I would think that someone could potentially die from the stress induced - say if they had a weak heart to begin with.
You mentioned they were pickled. Did you perhaps put a few drops of olive oil in the bottle? My stepdad used to grow his own peppers to put in vinegar and use as a hot sauce to put on cooked greens. Someone told him it would add more heat if he put a few drops of olive oil in it before letting it sit. The result was that he couldn't use the sauce as it was too hot for him. This was just a medium heat pepper, like a tabasco type. Same stuff he always used except for the few drops of olive oil.
I don't know what phenomenon causes the oil to make it hotter. I would be scared of a bhut anyway, but I would be doubly scared of a bhut pickled with olive oil in the mix.

i would be worried about his gut... that much acid...heat...whatever you wanna call it? HE TOOK IMMODIUM? ?!!!!!!!!!!!!!! so he's slowed down or basicly locked up his bowels and that poison is sitting in there..... locked up with no where to go? eating at his intestines?

He took imodium as he was pooping it all out. He was backed up yesterday and very tired and now back to normal. He says it was the worst stomach pain ever. That is what he gets for his hubris. He was so proud of himself for 5 seconds! I think he would have been ok had he not eaten the seeds. We were back to green curry for supper tonight. I went a bit easy on the heat.
Oily things make food spicier, and hotter. Coconut milk can increase spice some.
BTW I can't feel too sorry for him because I have debiliatating IBS. I work and garden with it and when he has stomach pain I usually roll my eyes. I am also super touchy with antiinflamatories such as Aleve and Advil!
