Does anyone know if they actually, really are toxic and attractive to Japanese beetles ? Read that dsomewhere a few years ago, started growing them and have seen an actual reduction in Jap. beetles, but not sure if it was just a bad year last year, for their numbers. Deb

Deb one or another of my former roommates grew Four O' Clocks over the course of several years (in NH) and their result did't keep them out of they bed they grew them in.
That said, I don't recall Four 'O' Clocks getting beaten up by Japan beetles.

Hi, dld.
I've grown Four O'clocks and have had good luck soaking the seeds overnight before planting. A friend of mine started the seeds indoors and sold plants.
A few times, after growing them all summer, I dug the tubers and planted them in pots. I brought them in for the winter and stuck them in the basement. The following spring I replanted them.

w8in4dave, I 'm going with the four o clocks, marigolds and zinnias as the marigolds and zinnias are the wife's favorite and I'm wanting the four o'clock for a section of our yard that has just irises and they bloom in early to mid spring and we want to have some color there a lil longer and I think that they will drop their seed and spread???
