I have a few patches of beautiful bi-colored Iris (purple and white) that need to be thinned out and was wondering when the best time to do this is! They are just starting to flower at the moment, should I wait till they have died back or what?

I don't know what kind of iris you have, but it it's Louisiana Iris-the best time is September.

Yep, I agree. Let them bloom, allow the flowers to show and die back and then let the tubers gain back strength and store carbohydrates. Then dig and cut the leaves down to about 2 or 3 inches. Replant those you want to keep very shallow. My wife has hundreds of varieties and I get to thin the herd every year. For you September sounds about right.

Thanks for the tips y'all, September does sound like a great time as I'm hoping that the weather will be just a bit cooler here!

Here is a pick of the color I have, I didn't thin them like I should have but I did whack them down last year with my mower...

Looks like bearded iris... In the north, they divide their beards in August... Down here in the deep south... October is more like it... Trying to do it in August tends to set them back... still too hot.

I have bearded iris too. They're so pretty and easy. They lived without a hitch through the years of our horrible drought. Even when the daylillies were drooping the iris's were standing tall.
