June blooming lilies. My earliest and hardiest lilies are native to Europe, and they grow well here and in Denmark: Madonna Lily (lilium candidum) is both from my own garden in Denmark and bought here. Two of the latter are budding and ready to flower despite some hardship. Martagon Lily (lilium martagon) has 14, 5, and 4 buds on three stalks. Last year they had fewer on just two, and they didn't bloom, even shed two big and colourful buds just before opening. The lack of success of these two species may in part be due to almost daily spraying with cold tap water from a hose (not my idea, and not happening his year). Orange Lily aka. Fire or Tiger Lily (lilium bulbiferum). This one and the preceding are all from my mother's garden in Denmark, and it will bloom for the first time (five buds on one stalk). Despite its scientific name, I've never seen airial bulblets (bulbils), so it's probably the subspecies croceum and not the nominal one.

Later lilies species. Some of my lilies are native to Asia and hardy: Tiger Lily (lilium tigrinum) has orange "turkscap" flowers, and they were here already before we got the allotment. They bloom mostly in August. Henry Lily (lilium Henryi) was bought by me as a single bulb from Jyllands Frøhandel, but has later grown. There may be up to 20 flowers or more on each stalk (in late August or early September). What I have now is unknown, because it never bloomed here. In Denmark I also tried Japanese lily (lilium speciosum), which is very late and didn't grow well. I had better luck with Regal Lily (lilium regale), which mostly blooms in July with white trumpets. It comes in a yellow version too (Royal Gold). I haven't got any here in Poland, but may try them.

Hybrids There are also plenty of lily crosses, some were in the allotment already, and others have been bought by my MIL. Most bloom in July (mid season), and there are both trumpets and upright flowers. Variety names and parentage are unknown, and I take less of an interest in these than in species.

Last I saw it (Sunday), my Martagon Lilies were blooming on all three stalks (5, 3, 2 flowers), and I think they opened Saturday. Haven't seen any other lilies blooming, and don't expect much to happen, as the weather changed to cold and wet.

Now all Martagon Lily buds have opened (14, not 13 on the main stalk), and the fire Lily is also blooming: 1 finished, two open and two buds, but the Madonna Lilies will not bloom, as they were cut in a "weed" whacking and lawn mowing operation by a non-gardener. Pictures of the "survivors" will follow when my wife copies them to the computer.

Now (more precisely yesterday) my Martagons and fire Lily are finished. Martagons willingly volunteer, often in unexpected places far from the mother plant, and at least one of mine started as a volunteer among bushes in a remote corner of my mother's garden, so I'll let them develop seeds and either gather them myself or let (ants?) do the job, even if my MIL often beheads flowers after blooming.

Today the first of my hybrid lilies started blooming: a single flower on a brickred trumpet lily (two stalks, each with 5 buds) and a lily with much smaller upright white flowers, 3 of which are open.

The hybrid "trumpet lily" is not a true trumpet, more in between a turkscap and a lily with big flowers (either trumpet or upright), but the parents are of course unknown. Now there are at least five pale brickred flowers on each of two stalks. A lily with big upright white flowers is also blooming with at least four flowers on one stalk and one on each of three smaller. There are also fiery red flowers on two lilies in different places, and I have a hybrid with true trumpets, which has light pink flowers (2).

Today I noticed that another hybrid trumpet is blooming: one with two light yellow flowers, so that I have two different: the light yellow one just mentioned and a pink one with two open flowers and one finished. Hybrid lilies are interspecial crosses, which are often sterile and can only be propagated vegetatively. Even if they produce viable seed, they will not grow true to type, and I never tried any.

"My" Tiger Lily (lilium tigrinum) is blooming now with orange "turkscaps" flowers. I expected them to bloom in August and not earlier. There are five open flowers on three plants, and they started blooming Saturday.

Along with "My" Tiger Lily (lilium tigrinum), another similar lily is blooming now. The flowers are more light orange than the fiery red of the Tiger Lilies, and it has no bulbils. Probably it is Henry Lily, but I have seen them bloom in second half of August and even September in Denmark. I have seen two flowers of three possible, and in another place there is one of two.

Hi Lily lovers! I had two tall red lilies happening this summer - the flowers are finished but the stem with leaves & the buds where the flowers came out from are still happening. Do they bloom more than once or what? Do I dig up the lilies & pet-moss the bulbs until it's time to winter plant them or what? The lilies were gorgeous but they didn't last long. I have two Lilium - Gran paradiso - shows flowering season is June-Aug. so not sure if it's just one blooming or dare I hope for round two? Anyone know?
