Some of these are definitely new to me! I did know about garlic's antibacterial properties, though. When I was pregnant with son #1, I contracted campylobacter (a type of bacterial food poisoning) and wound up in the hospital. They put me on erythromycin and I got a couple of doses before we learned that I am allergic to it. Since they didn't have any other antibiotic that was both effective against campylobacter and safe to use during early pregnancy, my OB put me on a regimen of 10-12 garlic capsules per day to help me get past the infection. I was already getting better by this time (else I would not have been able to keep the garlic capsules down), but I still wasn't well. He said the garlic would help make my intestines a hostile environment for the campylobacter so I could recover faster. He also recommended that I keep on consuming the garlic capsules (just a couple per day) throughout the pregnancy to help prevent future problems. Garlic is good for you, no doubt!
