Banana peppers seem to do better for me than bells. I seem to have a problem growing peppers from seed. They never seem to get very big even though I start in February for planting in May I can never get them more than 4 to 6 inches tall.

I like to keep the greenhouse between 75 and 80 when peppers plants are young for the definitely do not grow as fast as a mater. And as well I start them a month earlier then the maters to.

izitmidnight, stratcat, paulf, materman, the sweet banana peppers are a no.#1 pepper for us here, they never fail to produce loads of peppers every year for us... LOL...it's a good thing we love them. We are just a family of 3 now the daughters off and married but just 5 or 6 plants of these and it gives us plenty, even when the daughter gets her a mess of them.

Any favorite varieties, Dude? Been a long time since I grew sweets, since they were always the favorites of the pepper maggots, but now that I can prevent those bugs, I may grow some next season. Cubanelles and banana peppers were always the best producers for me.

(Dudette jumping in here)
Bounty F1 and Boris F1 have been extremely vigorous sweet banana peppers for me here in the heat and wet and root-knot nematodes and bugs. I grow the OPs too, but I will say that these are decent hybrids.
(I admit that I went a little wild with the cheese-wiz in the past two years and now have about 105 varieties of peppers to try to grow for timothyt's smoked paprika recipe!)

I had several ask me for the sweet banana pepper plants this spring, so I guess I might have to try some. I still have high hopes on a few new ones this year like Donkey Ears and a few others. I do see some are earlier then others and some are going crazy. Got some Red Marconi that are just starting to set on fruit, but are already 3ft tall or better. Don't know what got into them for I didn't fertilize them. I am still waiting for some to come up and got one more variety I need to drop soon. I am crazy indeed.

Crazy only in the very best way my friend! In fact, I wanna be crazy like you!
There is one more pepper that performs really well and looks/tastes so much like a banana you'd think it was. But it gets longer and is more tapered at the end than the regular sweet bananas...Sweet Spot Bullhorn. Unfortunately an F1. But that doesn't mean I can't save my seeds and plant them...see what I get! I had one in a 5 gal pot last year and it gave me three to four beautiful peppers every week like clockwork until frost in mid-November. And I never fertilized it once it was in the pot (neglected, poor little thing!).
