Thanks for that article.
I was toying with the idea of shading my peppers this summer. Last year I noticed that even in a self-watering container with a continuous water supply, the plants wilted some in the early afternoon from June-August, and I had a lot of culls. Even the undamaged peppers were a lot smaller than the peppers that ripened in May and early June.
Now to find a small quantity of 30% shade cloth for a reasonable price...

or, you could grow peppers without black plastic mulch and save yourself the trouble...

I don't use black plastic mulch for anything in the summer here - it's hot enough already! But yes, the photos in the article showed the plants growing under black plastic.
Mine are in Earthboxes with a white plastic mulch cover. The sides of the boxes are dark green, but in the hot months the plants are big and dense enough to mostly shade the boxes anyway. I think the sun on the plants' leaves and fruit is too intense. I have two boxes of bell peppers, with four plants in each box. So, I may shade one box and not the other and see if it seems to help the shaded peppers. (Yes, I know that's much too small a sample to be statistically valid.) I probably won't set up the shade until it gets really hot in late May or June, though.

Last year was indeed a rough year to grow peppers around here, but fortunately I am a junk man. When the neighbor offered to give me her kids broken trampoline I said sure I will take it. Used the side net for a shade cloth. It was 8'X45' and had the eyes for tying it up already sowed in. Worked great.

There are a lot of messed up trampoline's around here. It is a wind tunnel here not to mention we are in tornado alley. I had my neighbor's hung up on my fence last year. Luckily out of the garden season cause it would have destroyed my garden.
