I'm a big fan of battery-powered tools. When you're hanging over the edge of my roof at midnight to make a cut, as we have, cordless tools weigh less and are easier to handle. There's no cord getting in the way.
For Christmas, 2001, I received a Ryobi Combo Kit consisting of a Drill/Driver, Circular Saw, Reciprocating Saw, Charger and Worklight. I liked the Worklight so much, I bought a second one. The tools are powered by two Ni-Cad 18 Volt re-chargeable batteries that are included.
As I’ve replaced the batteries over the years, one time I bought the two batteries, a charger and another Drill/Driver for $19 more than the two battery price. I now have three Drills and I prefer to use the original 2001 model.
In March of 2011, I picked up a Rockwell Combo Kit consisting of a Drill/Driver and an Impact Driver. It included two 18 Volt re-chargeable Lithium batteries and a charger. I charged the two batteries in March, 2011, and the second one still is keeping the original charge. Today, I drilled a hole in a 2x4. That’s just amazing. Having a charge a full 27 months later!

It is amazing how long those lithium batteries last! I got a cheap, 12v drill to keep at my Mom's, so I wouldn't need to take one over there, and recently I had to use it...probably at least two years after the last time. Figuring I had to charge it first (which is even faster than the old ones), I took it out, and checked to see iff it had any power at all. It was so strong that I couldn't hold the head still when I pulled the trigger (how I usually check for power). I have two old, MH type drills, and if I could get lithium replacement batteries for them, I would, otherwise, I will have to replace the drills, as the batteries often die in just a couple weeks, and the batteries are relatively new. I have a small lithium drill, which is always ready to use, though it never has to wait as long as the one at Mom's did!

Not quite the same thing as ya'll are talking about, but with my move to the country, I've changed my shopping routine from shoes and handbags to tools. In the past, with only a city lot, an electric weedeater was adequate for my needs and abilities. Gas powered trimmers were too much for my hands - I can not get them started with those pull strings. On a recent trip to the "big city" (pop 4,000), I learned there is a trimmer made by Troy Built that has a rechargeable battery pack, used to turn it on, then you toss it aside, and continue running it on gas (both 2 cycle and 4 cycle available). Just the ticket to trim multiple 100' rows of fruit trees and grape vines. Too bad, none were in stock at the time. But soon. Very soon.
