My peppers are slow this year, as I notice a lot of other's have been, probably due to the incredible rain we have had in this area. They still produce, but slowly. The super hot peppers - Trinidad scorpion, 7 pot brain strain, and the habs - were really behind, esp. the covered ones, so next year I'll plant all of those in pots, since they really seem to like the hot soil.
The best find of the year was the Korean Hot Pepper, from evergreenseeds.com. It was the earliest full sized pepper I had, though superchili still ripened a few days before. And even after harvesting all these ripe ones, they are so loaded with green peppers, I am having trouble staking them up! They remind me of Gold bullet plants - they spread out so much, I find them 2 plants over! Great flavor green - this is what evergreenseeds sells them as, a green pepper, and this is what caught my eye, as the fresh peppers used in most Indian food are used green. The peppers are also good fresh ripe; though I haven't dried any yet, I am assuming they will be good dried, as well. The flesh is a little thicker than some, so I may have to slit them to dry - I'll test some whole, to see how they do w/o slitting.
One pepper did not turn out like it has in the past - the Superthai, which I have been buying for years from Pinetree Gardens, but this year I got something else. It has been a 5-6" long by about 1/2" wide pepper, and this year I got a small, 2" Thai pepper, that looks just like the "Thai Super" from Gurneys, that I tried last season, and decided not to grow again. Small plants, but loaded with peppers, though the peppers are a little sour, and not really that hot, for a Thai pepper. I am going to contact them and ask about this, now that I have photos. And it wasn't a case of switched pots, as I didn't grow the Gurney's peppers this year.
The fresnos did well this year, and they are THE MOST determinate pepper I have ever seen! I pulled all of these from two plants, and every fruit was ripe or ripening, except for one on each plant, both of which were still full grown.
I grew the Thai Red Demons, from Renee's, and they weren't as productive as the Thai dragons, from T&M, but they are hotter! Around 70-80k, if I had to guess.
I also got some lombaks, but the Aruna and Phuljadi are lagging behind, with only a couple ripe ones, though they are loaded with green peppers. And the Arunas are hot from early on. The Hanoi Markets are loaded, but no ripe ones, though some are very close. A few I have to remember to isolate some flowers on, as I used the last of the seeds for them.
Now it's time for drying those things! Well, maybe not NOW...
