Yep time for most of us to put the rakes and hoes up for the winter, I was wondering if you do anything to them to prepare them... oil them, sharpen them, hang them, stand them or lay them flat?

This is what I am supposed to do: thoroughly clean, sharpen all the edges, apply a little oil to reduce rusting. I just hang all my tools up where they always are. What I do is leave them hanging where they were after the last time they were used.

That reminds me. As I had a 10-day interruption, I've forgotten to put my shovels, pitch fork, hoe, rakes, etc. in the garage. For the most part, they'll just be standing around waiting for next Spring.

Well, my tools get used more during the "winter" months than during the summer months. So they don't get any special treatment. A shovel, hoe and a rake permanently reside in the trunk of the car because I never know when I'll get to go to the garden. A duplicate set hang out in the water closet or on the porch for work at the house. "Crazy garden lady" can be seen out digging up beds anytime of the year.

Got out there today and put my tools in the garage. Then, I needed the spade, so I parked that in my indoor porch. Dragged chicken wire to the back yard to lie flat on the lawn for the winter.
After the snow melted last week, I got out and dragged the 1OO' hose to the garage. Also, the sump pump with its hose.
Still have to put away the tomato stakes-metal and wooden. Six sawhorses, too. I'm almost there.

stratcat I am glad to know I'm not the only one. I got mine inside the shop dirt and all still on them, grass on top of the mower deck, straw bales, fertilizer bags, and pots and trays laying around but hey just 10 more weeks and I'll be using them again.
