Okra Inhibits 75% of Metastatic Melanoma Cells in Vitro: Okra is emerging as a superfood against both #cancer and diabetes. In this study, #okra pectin inhibited the proliferation of highly metastatic mouse #melanoma cells (B16F10) by 75% after 48 hours of treatment and also increased the rate of programmed cell death (apoptosis) by nearly 23-fold. The researchers also discovered that the pectin triggered apoptosis by interacting with Galectin-3 (similar to the well-known modified citrus pectin). In other recent studies, okra was shown to kill 72% of human breast cancer cells (MCF-7) in vitro, and a population study revealed that American men eating a "Southern" style diet (characterized by eating okra, grits, cornbread, beans, rice and sweet potatoes) had 40% less prostate cancer. Multiple studies have now also confirmed okra as a potent anti-diabetic food both in lab experiments on tissue cultures and in rats. Clinical trials on people have not yet started, but the internet is currently teeming with anecdotal reports of diabetics finding help by soaking cut-up okra pieces in water overnight and then drinking the water in the morning (interestingly, roasted okra seeds have been used in Turkey for generations as a traditional medicine for diabetes). Bottom line: okra may be the next superfood of the 21st century. www.edenprescription.com/Okra.html

And it slips on down the throat in a right easy fashion! Yes I watched my wife eat some boiled with some seasoning one time, and thought It was the nastiest thing I have seen anyone eat! She bit off half a baby okra and I watched the slime drool down to her plate! I can't hack anything slimy in my mouth.

I think I will wait for the non okra tasting pills. I take fish oil capsules and there are garlic capsules without the garlic odor. Someone will come up with non-slimy okra tablets.

The trick with boiled okra is to use really small okra so you can eat the pod all in one bite - with practice you can get all the okra quickly and neatly off the cap and spare your fellow diners the sight of slime. If you are fine with the taste of okra, but can't handle the slime, there are slime-free ways to prepare it. You can slice the okra and boil it in jambalaya or soup (the slime dissipates and just thickens the broth), or make the classic Southern dish of okra and tomatoes (the tomatoes get rid of the slime). Or just don't boil the okra at all - there's no slime if you pickle or fry it. If you like Indian food, there are a lot of Indian recipes that use sauteed okra with lots of spices. Of course, if you don't like the flavor of okra, I realize that you're not going to eat it prepared in any fashion. Maybe someday someone will come up with okra tablets for Paulf after all.

As for me I live south of the Mason Dixon Line, so indeed I like okra. Yes it has to be put in gumbo, pickled, or fried before I can eat it. My problem is this year that my okra didn't want to come up. Planted it twice and still only got three plants to come up. Too late to plant now.

Now that's a shame. I hope you have a better okra year next year. Do you have seeds for next year? I just saved a bunch of Red Burgundy seeds. Since this variety produced first and I saved the first pods from each plant, they should be are true. Want some?

I'm with Paulf on the pills. That would be the way to get okra in me. I, too, take fish oil capsules and I'm not burping fish. They can do it.
