One of my 2O13 ornamental kale overwintered. When I dug it up this spring, I noticed it was alive so I stuck it in a pot. It wasn't in full sun and grew two shoots. I expected it to bolt, but it didn't. I have it heeled in my cottage garden for the winter to see if it makes another year. You can see last year's dried stalk on the right. This picture is from October 21, 2O14.

there is some kale here that was planted in the fall of 2013 and it has not yet gone to seed, it is a bit spicy
the mild kale already went to seed over the summer, but all of the kale here is still living so I don't know
maybe some kale just takes 3 years to go to seed ?

Last fall, I dug up the Ornamental Kale and overwintered it in Mom's basement. It's been watered a little. On the 19th, I see it's bolting even tho' it hasn't had much light over the winter.
