I just got bulbils for that in sept. I planted a bunch of them, over 30 I am sure. If even half bloom, I'll have plenty of bulbs next summer for ya, richard. My neighbor told me to take all I wanted from his garden. They spread like crazy. They were tall, like 3 ft. It looked cool with all the bulbils at the top. Some were the size of a regular onion start.

I plan to grow those as well. I have been told to save the biggest/best for planting, and eat the rest. If you like them, give them plenty of room, and they will multiply and spread, giving you a perpetual source.

Here's a shot of my Catawissa Onions on 8 July, 2008. They do walk around. I grow them for fun and haven't tried them.

You probably need to be a Southerner to appreciate these, but check out potato onions! They are uncommon outside the deep south, but there, they used to be in every garden. One of the few sources around: www.tateronions.com/

Today I planted a couple bulbils of Catawissa out in front of the house. We had rain yesterday and 48F (9C) at night so the snow is gone and the ground is soft in my garden. I like to plant these whenever the soil isn't frozen. ;D

I had planted these several times, but each time that they would get to the point of just about being mature...I had to move! not any more! I now own just a bit over 4 acres and will not move again, so I would need to try one more time to even know past year two! but I just can't bring myself to buy this yet again.

I finally found a local source for my prized Cippollini Onion, so that's the one I'm growing for sure. I also just recently got seeds for Lilia, a red bunching onion, so I'll find some space for that one as well.

My dad and I grow the small multiplying onions. Makes about 20 to 30 small onions in a cluster. These can be grown in containers as well..

what's the minimum container size for egyptian walking onions? If you want to eat them as green onions first thing in the spring.... Put them side-by-side in a gallon pot. If you want to grow them all summer long... I'd guess that 6-8 bulbils would would do fine in a gallon pot if you kept them watered.

Everyone always thinks red onions are sweet. I always say they are once cooked but fresh they can be real eye burners. Sweet onions are sweet- like Walla Walla. They are not quite white and not quite yellow IMO.

I feel the same way as littleminnie about red onions. They can have a real bite. Vidalia is my all time favorite - nice and sweet. Best onion rings I ever had were made with Vidalias. (I may be mistaken but if my faulty memory is working, Granex is the generic name for Vidalia, as Vidalias can only be grown in one location to use the name.)

Cippollinis are also sweet. I love them for braising or grilling.

No, they are NOT the same thing as tateronions (potato onions). Tater onions are getting harder and harder to find.

I've got 4 kinds of walking onions but won't have any topsets available until August. I've got Catawissa, Red Egyptian, Heritage Sweet, and what I call True Egyptian.

My neck is so sore! I planted 5 3-4 foot wide beds of onions and 2 rows of leeks today! The last few onions were really hard to plant. I planted Walla Walla, Big Daddy, Red Candy Apple, Ailsa Craig and Ringmaster. I have to finish out the beds with some red sets. The Big Daddy transplants were the biggest and best.

A few days ago, planted 68 Copra and 76 Red Zeppelin plants and 172 Amish bottle onion sets. Did it right ahead of an inch of rain and already showing signs of life. Still have more of the sets to plant but ground ain't ready yet.
