My first attempt at Grandpa Willie is this year, so I will have to edit this post in August. So far very healthy seedlings and they are ready to be put in the dirt this week if it stops raining.

Hey, dld! My friend with the Barnyard Garden made over 8O of those CRW (Concrete Reinforcement Wire) tomato cages. He didn't cut that ring off on the bottom. With some huge tomato plants, they were falling over. Haven't grown Grandpa Willie, yet.

I have used the CRW cages for fifteen years. I do not cut off the bottom ring. I anchor by using two electric fence posts wired to the cage, one post on either side of the cage. 50 mph winds will not knock them over. (that force wind happens every once in a while in Nebraska).
The first set of CRWs got left in Iowa for the new owners of the house we sold them. I don't think they were ever used as cages after we left. My "new" ones are in their tenth year and still going strong. Be sure to spray with a strong bleach solution every spring so any pathogens are killed.
