I'm pretty sure that I've heard other people talk about NuMex Big Jim in this forum. So I thought I would post a rate and review thread for it, to gather everyone's opinions about it in one easy-to-find location. I've grown seeds that were supposed to be Big Jim, but they weren't true to type. So, if you've grown the real deal, it would be great if you could tell us what you think about it. Growth, production, taste, uses, etc?

I have not grown this one, but if I ever want medium to hot peppers, the Chili Pepper Institute is the place to go. I always get what they say it is and germination is superb. If you want some "real" chile sauces, they've got it.

Just to clarify, the NOT-Big Jim seeds I got came from a trade.
I don't want anyone to think that the Chile Pepper Institute sent bad seeds.

I grew Big Jim many years ago, but it was infected by pepper maggots, so I stopped. Now that I can control those maggots, I tried it again last season, and it was fantastic! It grew best in the Earthbox, but also grew very well in the ground, almost as large, though not quite as productive as the EB. Great flavor, with only about 2k heat (just guessing), so it's a little hotter than the poblanos I have grown. It roasts and peels very easily - more so than poblanos - and the flesh is fairly thick, so you get a lot from them. Freezes well in Foodsaver - I weigh out 4 and 8 ounce bunches of it, freeze it on plastic wrap on a baking sheet until almost frozen, but still flexible, then Foodsaver it. I just used some last night - I figured I'd better use up all of last season's chiles fast, as I have a couple Big Jims about half size out there!
