Just wondering who here cuts their own grass, if you have any.
Grass is the main reason I hate the summer, because I have to start cutting it again, even with my riding mower I hate it... it's just to hot and dusty...

Here in the midwest we usually say mow the lawn. And yes, I mow my own lawn; the biggest portion with a riding lawn mower (do you say riding grass cutter?) and all the trim work and steep hills with a self-propelled smaller lawn mower and a string trimmer. The hills are being planted into ground covers as I age so that soon there will be no hills to mow. It is a chore that right now I do not mind but in the foreseeable future I would love to turn over to a young person....if you can find one who be willing to do manual labor.

I push the mower in two yards; too often for me and not often enough for neighbors. It's more bearable wearing my hearing-protector AM-FM radio headphones. At least I have music going...

We used to cut 2 acres of lawn with a gas push mower. These days, we have a tiny urban property of which almost half is garden. Takes maybe 20 minutes to do the entire place with our new electric mower. If it were up to me, there would be no grass. All veggies in the backyard and a bee and butterfly garden out front but Hubs likes the lawn thing.

I always use hearing protection when operating machinery. I need to get a new set of phones; the music part of mine died a few years ago but I still wear them.

Last summer, I mentioned I saw the 95-year old woman down the street pushing her gas mower. Wow!

My DH does the grass cutting...does that count as having someone else do it for me?

My Mom mowed the lawn the day before she moved into senior housing because she didn't want the neighbors thinking she didn't care about the property. She had six sons in the area but she wanted to do the work herself.

We have a neighbor lady down the street in her 70's and she uses a 2 sticker (zero-turn) mower better than some landscaping crews... lol!

I have a powered mower, and I do parts of lawn with it. This summer I have turned over the majority to a local elf. He humors me and uses the grass catcher, so I have garden mulch.

What height do you cut your lawn in the Summer... I cut ours at about 4 inches because I think it helps a little to choke out some weeds and it does help shade grass roots... am I thinking this all wrong??

Differing the mowing heights during the summer was always the norm. For the last couple of years the turf specialists at the University of Nebraska have been advocating keeping the grass depth the same no matter the season. Their studies have indicated this new practice is healthier for turf and healthy grass chokes out the weeds. They do say to keep the grass depth at about two to three inches. Whether that works for all parts of the country I don't know.
I have always just set the height and mowed the same all summer. Not ahead of the curve, just lazy.

Three inches is what's recommended for most of the grasses that are used in my area - and definitely no shorter than two inches. If you cut grass too short, it allows more light to reach the soil and promotes weed germination, and the sun reaching the soil dries out the ground faster. Also, keeping a lawn mowed really short can weaken or even kill some species of turf grass over time. And like paulf said, healthy grass chokes out weeds pretty effectively.

I hate this thread. I just got done trimming the fence line, trimming, weed eating, raking and mowing. I got nothing left. This gray haired old lady is done in.

spike, it's still kinda on the warm side you just make sure you stay hydrated. I got the pole saw out and fell a couple big dead and low limbs and been working on trying to get them cleaned up and i'm exhausted.

I used to hate it, tried to dump the job on someone else, but then I realized it wasn't that hard. It even helps to get rid of unnecessary thoughts. Besides, my eldest son helps, he likes this kind of work.

I remember the day well when I came into the house very angry and told my wife that I can't even mow my lawn! My lungs could not handle it anymore. Grass didn't go uncut. Next door neighbor took care of the front with his riding mower. Ukrainian friends took over control of the back lawn. Now most of that is by their 12-year-old son. Already has been done once this spring and due either this evening or tomorrow morning. Clippings in front go back onto the lawn. In back, bagging mower collects them for the compost tumbler.
