I think so. Sunflowers have shallow roots and that is why they fall over so easily in storms. When you pull them out they don't have a huge root ball.

Gosh Erwin, I don't know about Titans. They get REALLY tall. I had 3 last year that had to be staked with 12 ft 2x2's. Do you have some way to lash them to a railing or a fence? Any wind and they'll fall over. If you get squirrels or other critters that go for sunflower seeds, be sure to bag the heads in the fall with some kind of guazy fabric like tulle or fine netting. If they're particularly cheeky, they could still bite through it. You need vigilance close to harvest time so you get the most of that harvest. If you're growing them for the wildlife, obviously, then you don't have any issues except for the staking factor.

Rich, I'm not sure sunflowers and corn get along. It seems to me I've read that they're not good companions. I'll have to check my book.

Sorelina, We don't have squirrels here(how I wish I have some as pets). We only have pussy-rats (rats that are big as cats) but I have cats here so they are not a real problem. My only concern are the wild birds if they can swallow sunflower seeds. So they do need stalking. Thanks for the tip Minnie, I have no choice but to grow them in 5 gal grow bags so I'll let you know If I can get those titans as big as they are supposed to be.

Is there a particular sunflower that is best for saving seed from for human consumption? My kids eat these things from the store all the time and thought I would try and grow and process them right from our garden?

I grew those last year. By July, I couldn't reach the top. I grew them next to my corn. They did great, the corn, not so much. I' found some volunteers popping up so I moved them to another location.

i have some kind of sunflower seeds do they need direct light? I've usually sown sunflowers in the garden. I have started a few inside in cells to set out and they were in the dark. Sunflowers love full sun to grow in.

i have, i guess, 8 sunflowers growing right now, all started at the same time, but how 1 of them is already having a flower bud while the others don't? I'm using the same soil for each plant.

Ciao all-
Found this thread again and finally got around to consulting my book, Carrots Love Tomatoes. It was beans that don't like sunflowers, not corn. Sunflowers are said to reduce numbers of armyworms and certain beetles when grown in alternating rows with the corn.

Adobo-I have never had a sunflower branch if you cut the head. There are some varieties of multi-branched sunflowers, though, that get about 5 ft. tall. I have a couple of them, when they start going to seed, the finches and cardinals just tear them up!

Ciao Erwin-
It's nice to see your sunflowers. I still have yet to sow mine! Crazy spring. Your Titan looks amazing. If the squirrels don't get the heads, you'll have a lot of seeds for roasting. I hope that Mammoth Russian is right. I guess we'll see as it grows. It's supposed to be a big-headed one like the Titan.

Love the sunflower pics Adobo. I have some coming up, but not to flowering stage yet. I've got to dig through my notes. I don't even remember what variety I planted.
