I've decided to try to keep more on top of garden pests this year before anything gets out of control. I generally will kill anything I happen to see, but today I walked the garden specifically looking for the pests the lizards and birds have not picked off yet. They generally do a wonderful job, but they don't get everything.
On the chard I found and did away with about a dozen snails. Mostly small ones. This year there aren't as many as usual because of the drought, but some, especially near anything that gets water.
In the back, there were a few young cabbage worms on the greens, which I picked off and fed to the goldfish. I'm sure there's more I missed.
On the peppers, I found several pests. A few small larvae of some sort that last year became a problem. This year, thus far, there were only a few, but I'll keep better watch. Also two small grass hoppers, and a couple leaf hoppers. I picked off what I coujld with tweezers and killed 'em. The chilis are looking good.
On the various squash I've seen cucumber beetles in the flowers. Last year I used a cordless hand-held vacuum to suck them up. Need to start doing that again.
In the far back, there is new gopher activity. Will have to find a run and set a trap.
I also saw a bunny, but he's safe for now. Enjoy the day, Fluffy, it may be your last.

Colorado potato Beetles have arrived here and I started my hand smashing program today. I will be doing this pretty much daily throughout the season but then I am in my garden every day anyway and it only takes a few minutes. Asparagus beetles have also arrived and I do the same thing with them. I use a floating row cover on my cabbage and cauliflower so there are no cabbage worms there. I highly recommend this to have worm free cabbage crops.
