I HATE the smell of tomato plants! It doesn't take much... just walking by and rubbing or bumping into it and it puts out an odor I just don't care for... it doesn't run me out of the garden but still... shoowee! How about you??

Ha! Love the smell - it means summer to me. I run my fingers over my seedlings soon after they emerge just to smell that familiar smell after months of deprivation.

The tomato plant odor is not pleasant and there is a purpose to the stink. Tomato plants develop a natural pesticide that will repel a certain percentage of harmful insects. Not only that, when the odor is released because an unwanted insect begins to feed on a tomato plant, that plant emits an excess of the pesticide and all tomato plants downwind receive the odor and react by a marked increase of their own pesticide which then protects those plants. Amazing!
It is the smell of spring but also the smell of plant cooperation and self preservation.

I don't like the smell, either. But it's worth putting up with it for the tasty tomatoes later. paulf, thanks for the information about why the smell is so potent (and unpleasant to most of us).

A friend of mine loves that aroma of the leaves, like september, and runs his hands through them, like I do with basil and rosemary for the aroma. I keep reminding him that this can spread diseases, but he still does it.

Marigolds are stinky, too. But I love handling basil and especially thyme to get the scent on my hands.

me too. I like the smell of basil in the garden but not in my food and lemon thyme is the best smell.

Cilantro-the worst stench ever. It's almost like it socks me in the face. I feel overwhelmed and sinus headache-y at the first whiff. I have it for my rabbits who love it. But pew-eeeeee!

Funny how people are different. I love the smell of cilantro, and the taste, too. But lavender gives me a headache, guaranteed. Vanilla used in cooking smells nice to me, but to me vanilla-scented anything is so cloying that it almost makes me ill. Of course lavender and vanilla are two scents that most people just love, judging by all of the candles, potpourri, air fresheners, laundry detergents, lotions, bath products, etc., etc. I bet that cilantro is easier to avoid...unless you have rabbits!

Two herbs that I grow, that don't really smell good fresh, are epazote and curry leaves. However, once in the dishes in which these herbs are used in, the dishes aren't the same without them - the reason I grow them!

I like the tomato plant smell and also, yep, it makes me think of tomatoes to come. I also have a big rosemary bush that I will take some and put it in the cars in the summer for it to get the stale car smell out.And Basil, oh yum. I find it calming to stick my face in the basil, but only after checking for bees! Cilantro is a favorite of mine, too. Almost all the herbs scent I like, except lavender.

The thing about cilantro like or dislike is believed to be genetic. With tomato leaves, maybe a man's thing but I also don't particularly like the smell.

It's funny how people are different. I LOVE the smell of tomato plants and I thought that everybody did so I am surprised. I like to smell even the tiny seedlings.
I HATE the smell of cilantro though. Yuk. It smells like soap to me but my bees love the flowers.

I kinda like the smell of tomato plants, but that is probably because it reminds me that there will be fresh tomatoes soon. One smell I don't like is the smell of sage in the garden but I love the taste of sage in breakfast sausage. Love the smell of rosemary but a little goes a long way when used in cooking. I think my favorite herb foe smell and taste is oregano.
