I've grown potato onions actually an old heirloom variety called Broome Longkeeper. They're the same as what is called and sold as multipliers here. In the spring you can find boxes of multiplier bulbs in all the garden centers. These are different from Egyptian other top setters or shallots.

hairymooseknuckles, I would think so, you have access to more varieties state side than we do up here. I've read about one called Green Mountain it's said to make huge bulbs. Do a search for this one. Not available up here . Annette

Organicbaby and I tried these a few years ago. We split an order. They didn't do very well for either of us. Zone 8B

hairymooseknuckles, buried deep in the linked article, it says that most multiplier onions are long day types, although there are a few day neutral and short day types. mgulfcoastguy, do you know what kind you tried to grow? If it was a long day type, that would explain your poor results.
