A few weeks ago I started some cuttings of the Mexican marigold (Tagetes Lemonii). It's a lovely drought tolerant plant that blooms in winter. I had several, but they are now years old and with the on-going drought have suffered greatly. So I decided to make new ones and found some nice healthy cutting material (close to the sidewalk).
From 36 cuttings (some rather marginal), I'd guess about half of them have taken. Perhaps more, but don't know for sure. I'll move them up into 4 inch pots soon, perhaps after acclimating them to the sun. Eventually they'll be planted along the street tucked in between the new pineapple guava plants. These should make an attractive screen.
This variety is a bit on the floppy side, but if minimally supported can grow to 3-4 feet. Their main draw is their prolific, very cheery flowers.

Thanks. I inherited a love for making new plants from my mom who had almost totally covered the back patio with her new babies.
It's a warm day here, perhaps up to 80*s. Perhaps a bit too warm for it, but I moved the cuttings outside into full sun, and then watered them. Good way to separate the rooted cuttings from those not. Baptism of fire.

Judging by the ones that obviously had failed when put in the full sun on a warm day, it looks as if only 6-7 of the 36 did not make it. That's a better yield than I had hoped for. I'll move them up, lavish them with phyto love, pick the best of the survivors to plant out, then give the rest away.

Finally got the rooted cuttings transplanted into larger pots. Maybe 3/4 gallon ones. I ended up with 28 rooted ones. I got my cuttings from 2 different 'near the sidewalk' sources. Looks like I got 2 different varieties. Or not. There are definitely two different vegetative forms. Could be different physiological states - one was blooming, the other more robust source was not. We'll see.
