I bought a couple of beans off flea bay the other day and as a thank you, I was sent 12 seeds of glass gem Corn. I had never even heard of it. It is mighty pretty, but 12 seeds isn't enough to save any seeds from and keep diversity. I'm pondering what to do with it. I could order more.
LIKE I NEED MORE SEED!!!
WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME?
Corn is easy to grow and I have the space.
Normally I don't try to save Corn Seed due to all the Corn that's grown around me.
NOPE! NOT GOING TO DO IT!
I won't rule it out though.

Corn and diabetes is not a good combo. Beans or cucumbers would be better.

You could grow it for Fall decorations. At 2 ears per plant you could actually get 24 ears if all of your seeds germinate or you could send it to me and I'll grow it for decorations and send you a picture!

It's coming to you! In the mail tomorrow! Really? Cool. Well thanks. I grow sweet corn but across the yard from my corn patch hubby grows a stand of Indian corn and I know that he will grow and love the Glass Gem. We really enjoy all of the different colors. I have seen pictures of Glass Gem but have never had any.

brownrexx Do you ever grind any of that colorful corn, or use it to make maize? Those would be some colorful tortillas! You can tell what my mind is always on, when it comes to corn. Just wish I had enough room grow some.

Do you ever grind any of that colorful corn, or use it to make maize? No we mostly use it for decorations and give a few bunches away to friends and then feed it to the deer at our cabin over the winter. We really enjoy feeding the deer and other animals. I do not have a garden there.

I got a copy of glass gem last year but did not grow it yet, wanted to, but no room last year. was going to grow it this year, but may have found something better to grow www.rareseeds.com/maiz-morado-or-kulli-corn/I never order corn seeds unless I can get at least 200 seeds, and try for 400 or more if I can get that many

spacecase0, Looks intriguing! I don't grow much corn. I used to grow G50 and also Hickory King. Don't get me wrong, I love to eat corn, but for some reason, it takes a backseat to other things. brownrexx, I'm happy for you to grow it. It's real pretty. It's one less thing I have to worry with. My beans will be center stage. Or that's my hopes anyway.

Just wish I had enough room grow some. I've not had glass gem ground and cooked, but a similar corn grinds into a tan colored meal which is far more flavorful than the typical yellow cornmeal. I hope to grow glass gem and a local heirloom Indian corn this year.

This year I want to grow Glass Gem and Mirai. I don't have enough space to plant them far enough apart so what should I plant first? The whole corn cross pollinating just hurts my brain. Please and thank you!

So actually Glass Gem is 105 days to maturity and Marai is 72 days. So I should be able to plant them at the same time? The Marai would be done before the Glass Gem was ready right?

Marai corn is a sweet fresh eating corn, so that is the number of days to eating stage, not the number of days to finish dry. the Glass Gem is a popcorn, so it is going to be listed as number of days to dry. so the 2 numbers don't really relate when they tassel and set cobs

Would your climate allow you to plant one then wait 3 weeks? I think that might work. Let's see what others say, but that's what I'd do.

I don't think it would matter. Here, I watch farmers plant then wait 3 weeks. The only reason being I don't want their frankencorn crossing with mine. I haven't grown corn in awhile, but that what I used to do. You know, on second thought, I think I would plant my sweet corn first. Give it a chance to tassel first. The popcorn will s the dominant corn.

if it were me, I would order a second batch of each seeds... then I would plant the seeds I already had this spring at the same time and watch one is first. the harvest that year would all end up as food. the next year I would take the data of what one was fastest and how much faster, and then plant the newly arrived seeds with timing so they don't cross.
but I do admit that I have to many multi year projects that are in my project seeds bin
