This is the pepper I told y'all about a few days ago. I lost track of who gave it to me. It took several attempts to grow this one out and get peppers. This picture is pretty old. My first iPhone I think. I have bought many packages of purple peppers over the years trying to find it to no avail. My seed is pretty old and it's been several years since I've tried to grow it again. i got it as a trade and it was simply labeled "purple pepper, purple foliage." I always though it was one of the prettiest peppers I'd ever seen.

I remember growing one like that, too, but, like you, it was long ago. I got seeds for Black Pearl this year, from daylilydude, but is much darker, thus the name. I'll see if I have records of it, in my old written logs, as it was a long time ago!

I grew a purple bell pepper several years ago. I thought that it was beautiful but it had a tough skin and no flavor. I ripped it out and composted the plant.

C'mon hairymooseknuckles! Why grow hot if you're not going to try it? And yoy have to sample them unripe, as well as ripe, just for the records. I found that pepper! That was fast - only the second year of logs I looked through - 1996. It was called ECUADOR. I got the seeds from a little dealer - the catalog was actually a stack of papers printed up, and stapled together! The peppers were "small, round, about 1/2", light purple, ripening to red, with nice purple foliage". The flavor was "extremely variable - some could be eaten like candy, while others were nearly inedible." This obviously was before I was eating habaneros like candy.

pepperhead212 , THANKS! If you only knew how long I've been searching! Sadly, that's the one and only picture I have of it! Tomatoden has seeds, but they have the wrong pepper shown under that name. Seeds may be hard to find

Reminds me of Bolivian Rainbow. It turns red when ripe. And it tastes terrible. TERRIBLE! It's marketed as an ornamental, and there is a good reason for that. Sure is pretty though!

All of the purple peppers I have grown have been bitter and pretty much inedible when unripe. And even when ripe, they really haven't been that good, but peppers like that can be dried, and used in recipes where the peppers are fried whole, to flavor the oil. This way, I didn't waste them, but I just didn't grow any of them again, except Maui Purple, as it was a very ornamental variety, with almost black leaves, and purple flowers, and those red peppers are gorgeous against the dark leaves. Oh yeah, it is also the hottest of any of them - approx. 225,000 heat units!

I bought the plant because I thought that purple peppers would be pretty in salads and stir fry's. I forget if they kept their purple color when cooked but the taste was so inferior that I ripped out the plant. Very disappointing.
I guess that the lesson here is that looks aren't everything!
