These were originally on the farm where I grew up at my Grandmothers house. After she passed,my Uncle moved to town and took a clump with him. When he passed, another uncle took a clump and brought them here to his farm. I have no Idea what they really are, I just call them wild roses. No clue exactly how old they are, but Granny lived on the farm from 58 to 76.

Beautiful old rose. I would bet it is one of the old fashioned varieties rather than a true wild rose. We have an old climber my wife's grandmother grew in the 1940s (we live in the house she lived in). You just can't kill those old ones and they are really pretty. Keep that old rose, it looks to be a good one. We show off great-great grandma's rose to our grandchildren and grandma's rose to our gardening friends. A good way to remember her. Wild roses have fewer petals. image hosting for website

paulf, Thanks for the information. I don't know anything about flowers. This thing just grows here. We don't do anything for it and we don't even water it. It's a little over 6' tall and grows in clumps. It's pretty dense and I'm not sure how many clumps we have, but it takes up about 8' diameter of space.

I know it would be thorny job, but I would trim out the dead canes and that will help the overall health of the rose and the blooms will be bigger and more plentiful.

paulf, Yeah, my wife was saying they needed thinning out. I wonder if I could specify that as a "Mommy" job. We do that around here when there's a job that needs to be done. I tell my wife the trash needs taken out and she says, "that's a Daddy job." LAUGHING

That really is a pretty rose. My husband loves rose bushes and we have a couple of them but I try to stay away because I just go near them and they seem to hook their thorns in my arms.
He has a climbing rose bush down near my garden and even though I tell myself to steer clear of it I always see a weed and when I pull it, the darn thing hooks me in the arm every time.
