Home mixes can be as effective as commercial preservatives. This easy-to-make recipe is my favorite.
1 teaspoon sugar 1 teaspoon household bleach 2 teaspoons lemon or lime juice 1 quart lukewarm water

And this is used for what? It's what you add to the vase of cut flowers to make them last just a little longer.

I would imagine you could use vinegar instead of the citrus juice. A video on preserving flowers longer in the vase used a solution of 7up or mountain dew for the sugar and acid components. The lady diluted the soda with half water. Seems kind of expensive to me however. I'd rather use simple household sugar/bleach/acid.
edit: I just noticed this thread was from 2011. Oh well.
