The 1st picture is of Habanero peppers from seedlings that I bought at a local nursery. The 2nd is of plants that I grew from seed saved from last year's Carolina Reaper plants. Hmmm....

I could never eat them but they sure do look pretty. Sometimes we grow some hot peppers just because we like to see them but then we give them away.

Hmm is right. Your Reapers don't look like Reapers, and do look an awful lot like the habs!
Any chance you had a bee cross happen last year?

Lookin' great! There's a slight point on the one reaper, but I would also be inclined to think that there was a cross with another hab. Did you isolate your blossoms before saving the seeds?

pepperhead212,...I did not isolate the blossoms. I grow all my peppers in containers... in close proximity to each other.... From my research, the Carolina Reaper is a cross of Ghost X Red Habanero...maybe the seedlings I bought were not fully stabilized...? I'm not really well schooled in the cross breeding thingy....

If the reaper is a cross, then the F2 would be totally different, usually reverting to the parents of the F1. Maybe that's what the habanero parent looks like?

From my research, the Carolina Reaper is a cross of Ghost X Red Habanero...maybe the seedlings I bought were not fully stabilized...? I'm not really well schooled in the cross breeding thingy.... There was so much controversy when Carolina Reaper came about... all kinds of secrecy and people accusing other people of stealing secrets and peppers and whatnot. But the end result was a new world record hot pepper that was released before it was completely stable. So depending on the generation of the seeds you started with, the Reaper plant you're working with could still be settling in to permanence. The Red Habanero used in the cross was Red Savina, specifically, which has a nice shiny exterior and was the hottest hab at the time. Your bottom picture looks like it's working on that nice shiny exterior, and I do see a few tails trying to emerge. It's possible that as they ripen they'll start to look less smooth and get that nubbly (and dangerous looking) exterior that is exclusive to the superhots.

ladymarmalade, My thoughts about reaper being a cross between savina and a ghost pepper is that the resulting pepper would be somewhere in between, as far as heat. Maybe way back, the cross was made, and the hottest from each generation after was chosen, until it was fairly stabilized. This would make more sense than every year's seeds being hybrids, though they often label things as such, to discourage people from saving seeds.

Mr. @jong, I'm thinking you need to do a taste test with these and let us know if it's the same...

This would make more sense than every year's seeds being hybrids, though they often label things as such, to discourage people from saving seeds. The whole project was really messy. They did crossing and back-crossing with hotter and hotter peppers trying to up the heat. For a long time the original breeder wouldn't even reveal the peppers he was crossing because he didn't want someone copying the project. Honestly, I'm not entirely sure of the process for peppers to get them hotter and hotter... Anyway, the first few batches of seeds that went out were definitely not entirely stable, and on top of that, I recall some business with a former employee/buddy stealing seeds and distributing them without permission. I remember the chatter about people growing out those first seeds and not always growing true, and then of course you have those people who grew those first ones and had cross pollination with something via bee, and right off the bat there's a whole glut of seeds being traded about that may-or-may-not grow real Carolina Reapers. Personally, I won't grow them again. I did not think they tasted fruity and far prefer regular Bhut Jolokia to the Reaper.

My current Lightning Habaneros are hot enough to make me cough. Chocolate Habaneros are the hottest that I can practically use.

far prefer regular Bhut Jolokia Shooooooweeee ladymarmalade, what do you use them in? SALSA!! The BEST salsa I've ever made had a Ghost in it. I was so worried it was going to be a mouth burner, but one pepper to an entire large batch of salsa made it tolerable. The flavor it imparted was incredible.
