I've grown a half-dozen varieties of BS but not that one. Dug around the Internet and find that the sprouts are around 1½" on 24" plants.

I was hoping these were decent sized. paquebot.. what have you grown? flavor and size that you would grow again? I have oven roaster in the garden maybe I should do a row of these somewhere too.

Oven Roaster was a good one. Franklin was one of the best. Hestia was also good. Long Island is hard to beat but big. Franklin also good and big. Falstaff was a purple flop. Bubbles also didn't impress me.

Long Island improved I THINK is the same as catskill. which I don't understand why there are two different names for it. I am growing hestia for the order along with diabalo and dagan. I ordered jade cross e and started those too.

LI and LI Improved are listed as old compact "heirlooms". Catskill is "semi-dwarf". 80 to 90 days to maturity for the LIs and 85 to 110 for Catskill. That info via Cornell University's database.

A couple sites listed "catskill (long Island Improved)" ... in their description so I was a bit confused.

I would suspect that LI Improved was one of the parents of Catskill. In that case, calling it an improved Long Island would be correct.

thanks for clarifying that. that makes sense. next year I plan to order oven roaster, if this years turn out well Hestia Franklin and maybe, do catskill and Jade cross E again if they are good. I have plenty of those seeds. any idea what variety you find in the grocery stores that are so nice and large? or how do they get such nice ones?

Biggest green variety is Franklin. Info says 1½" sprouts on 36" plants. We've grown them to 4'. Biggest red/purple is Red Bull. I have seed for that one but didn't start any this year. Friend was in charge of the sprouts and she planted a 60' row. With less area to play with, I ended up with 8 of her leftovers. Honestly have no idea what they are other than just two varieties.
