So I'm going to blame my arthritic feeling hands today on all the weed digging and pruning I've done the past few days, but I've also noticed, in general, and I hate to admit it, but it's getting harder and harder to open some of those stubborn, twist off jar lids...Even using a grippy thing to get a good hold does not help sometimes... And there's no big strong guy here to do that for me...So...
Do any of you have that same problem and do you have any fine gadgets that work well for you in that department?... If you do, I would love to hear about them...
I've seen a commercial on TV for something that grips down on a lid and "poof" the lid comes off but I often wonder if those things actually work...

Judy; we have a plastic device that looks somewhat like a long horse shoe. Inside it has several places where a lid will fit, each smaller than the last. We put the proper place over a lid, squeeze the "horse shoe" tight around it and twist. Works fine, but sometimes the lid is so tight that we have to secure the jar so that it does not turn with the lid.
It is a pain for one person if the lid is really tight, but with someone to hold the jar tight the tool works very well.

I have the same trouble sometimes and I am usually successful with the silicone grippy thing but it can be frustrating at times.
Hubby bought me a thing with 2 handles that you put over the lid but unfortunately, even though it did work, it did not fit the larger jars and I hardly ever used it. It was mostly for bottles, I think.

I haven't really started looking for one yet, but having that as another idea for one, broadens the search... Thank you...

The wife either uses me lol or she will take a spoon and tap around the sides of the lid a few times... most of the time she can twist it off after that...

I have a set of soft rubber/plastic perforated circle thingies that I can fold around the jar lid and they usually work pretty well. Sometimes a jar may have such a strong vacuum that I have to run the metal lid under hot water for a minute to expand it for easier opening. And if all else fails, I break the vacuum by wedging part of an old fashioned bottle opener under part of the lid and pushing up until it gives a pop, then you can unscrew it. I like the looks of the one that pondgardener linked to, may have to add it to my Amazon "later list.

For a number of years I was a metal fabricator. Some of us would have a competition to see who had the most powerful hands. Set a vice-grip pliers to it's minimum opening and try to close it over a thick piece of metal. Then keep adjusting it tighter until only the strongest hand could close it. My "Popeye" forearms had me the winner more than once. Now I keep an opener in my office to open some seed bottles!

Several years ago our younger son must have been thinking we were getting old and decrepit so he bought us a Black and Decker electric opener for any size jar r bottle you could imagine. It sat on the shelf for a number of years before it went to a garage sale. Good thing he has forgotten it. I felt bad selling the thing we never used. Nice thought for a useless gadget.

We have an under the cabinet opener similar to the hand tool in post #4. Works well as you can wrap a damp dish towel around the jar and use both hands on the jar.
I have used the Black and Decker electric jar opener. Definitely will get one soon, hopefully finding one at the thrift store or a garage sale....

Right now I use the silicon grippy pads and can almost always get jars open by myself. I have DH and 19 year old around as backups for especially difficult lids.
But as we get older (and for when I need to open a jar when DH or a son are not around) I like the looks of that under cabinet opener. I am going to put that on my "later" list as well.
